Baby Orajel

Does anyone use this? Good results?

My mom is all about me using this on Oliver's gums, but my babysitter told me some horror story about a baby whose throat closed up after using it or something like that and now I'm scared to use it.

Am I being overly paranoid? Or is this a known thing?

Re: Baby Orajel

  • It's really the only thing that works for us. He doesn't get it everyday and I don't use much, but it's amazeballs how quickly his mood changes after I put it on!

  • If you use as directed you should be fine. Also they make orajel swabs that like much better. Especially once they have teeth.

  • Like others said totally needed here! That and Tylenol and I even ordered the amber bracelet! My twins seem to teethe the same time- you can imagine the hysterics! Ps- that story must be some idiot that gave the tube!
  • I used it on DS1, it didn't really work and I've since heard that it's not recommended anymore because of numbness issues so I'm not planning on using it this time.
  • We use Hyland's teething tablets and they work really well.

We don't use Orajel...not for any specific reason really.

  • My pedi told me to get baby Orajel  I haven't used it yet as I had purchased the Hylands Baby Teething Tablets already.  I feel like everyone has a horror story about every product at some point.....

  • Hyland's teething gel isn't nearly as numbing (I tried it on me and couldn't tell but my friend swears by it).  My son once choked on his spit when we used Orajel (nighttime version fwiw) with him as a baby, and I didn't use much, so I'm leery to use it again.  He drooled A LOT though and I think with the numbness (maybe of his tongue?) it was too much for him?

I say if you use it, take caution and try not to get it on their tongue.

the Hyland's products aren't meant to be numbing as much as to promote " self healing. " The gel and tablets don't contain the numbing benzocaine that Orajel does. It's a homeopathic approach to teething relief.
