How to move Bedtime Up

Currently we feed our LO usually between 7-7:30pm and then he goes in his swing by about 8:30ish and usually he will go to sleep with a little encouragement. Then about 10pm I take him to his bed half awake - I change him in his PJs and feed him his last bottle of the day and usually he goes right back to sleep. As of now, every 3rd night we give him a bath about 9:45pm before his bedtime routine.

So to me, it feels like he is ready for bed for the day by 8:30pm but if I fed him his last bottle then, he would have only gone 1-1.5 hours since his last bottle and I don't think he would drink very much. and if I did away with the 7-7:30pm bottle then he would be very cranky by 8:30pm.

So I'm not sure what to do about that.

Plus I don't know if I should just straight up try to put him to bed closer to 8:30 or gradually move it up but as I move it up - I still don't know what to do about the problem described in the paragraph above.

Overall, he sleeps pretty good right now and he usually doesn't wake up for a night feeding until 4am-5am so I don't even know if I should mess with it at all but how do I know when he is ready for me to actually put him to bed in his bed without an interruption earlier?

I also would like to add reading him a bedtime story to use bedtime routine but don't know when I should do that? or how or where to do it in the current nightly events.

  • It sounds like everything is pretty routine and on a schedule, so you may not want to break that up. Maybe move up all the feedings so you can give a bigger feding before bedtime a little earlier. I BF my LO on demand and sometimes she can go 3 hours, sometimes 1 hour. Just give it a try and see how it goes.

  • My ds has about the same schedule. I'm planning on starting to put him to bed at around 8ish after the holidays and then wake him for a dream feed around 10ish when I go to bed. Lights off no diaper change. Then hopefully a feed around 4 or 5am.

  • you'll have better luck if you do bath and pjs before the 7/730 bottle. you already have the routine going, just later.

and is there a reason you are doing swing and not bed by 830?

my routine starts at 630 with bath, pjs and bottle. We're in bed by 8 and she sleeps for 11.5 hours. Even when waking in the night, we didn't take her out of the room and did all feedings or diaper changes in very little light. LO needed to know it was sleep time.
