leak issues w prefolds and thirsties

LO has had 3 leaks today and i'm not sure why. the prefold isn't sticking out. it feels like the trim on the cover is getting wet which is getting his clothes wet. I'm not stretching a diaper change more than 2 hours. 

do i need to strip them? how do i do that?

    how do i add more absorbency w/out extra bulk? i feel like its already bulky.

    Could be excess detergent. Try running the diapers through a prewash cycle on hot. If you have a top load machine, open it up when it's safe to and look at the water. If its bubbly and soapy, keep running prewash without detergent until the soap bubbles disappear. Then run a regular load with zero residue detergent and ensure double rinse. Use lots of water the more the better.

    There are some instructions online for how to strip your diapers using blue dawn but I haven't had to do that yet so I'm not familiar.
