Colds, teething, and spitting

DS is already an excessive spitter from reflux or whatever the heck he has cuz it seemed like the meds were helping then IDK cuz he started teething and got congested so now I can't tell the difference in his normal spitup and spit up from swallowing phlegm or large amounts of drool. This is really his first cold so I don't know what I should be expecting either. So... If your LO has already had a cold, did their spitting up change in any way because they were congested? Increase, decrease, thicker, waterier? If your LO is a big teething drooler, has their spit up gotten watery? DS has been spitting way more the past few days but last night was the first he was awake for 3 hours and spitting during that time. He usually never spits like this at night. He's not in pain, nothing has changed in his spitting except for that it has increased and maybe gotten a little more watery. This leads me to think he's swallowing excess drool from teething and the pedi even said she sees increase in spitup at this age 4 months because of the teething drool. I guess I'm asking cuz the pedi's office isn't fully staffed today and I don't feel like waiting all day for a nurse to call me back just to tell me this is normal. There isn't any blood or green bile in his spit up, either. So, what are you guys experiencing?

ETA: also have checked and he hasn't had a fever either.

Re: Colds, teething, and spitting

  • Lo is drooling a shiitton. Seriously, it's like someone turned on a faucet. And he's spitting up more. He's never been a spitter, so this is definitely new. His spit up is usually slimy from the amount of drool he swallows.

  • DD has a cold right now and i too feel like she has been spitting up more than normal. I called the nurse's line and they said not to worry. As long as there isn't any blood or it's not green then it is fine. I also think that DD is teething. She has her hands in her mouth a lot. I think she sometimes gags herself which cause her to throw up.

  • Is LO on Zantac? When my LO has had a cold he seems fussier and just overall miserable. It will get better though mama. Its tough.... LO is in daycare and I have already gone through two ear infections....

Yep, he's on Zantac. Just started it and was on it for maybe a week before he got this cold and started drooling more, so I haven't really been able to tell if the Zantac worked. He seemed to be less fussy when he ate being on the Zantac, but it's so hard to tell now.

  • DS used to be a huge spitter upper.  He wasn't fussy about it, but just as much would come out as we put in.  I can't believe he was still able to gain weight.  We tried Zantac and didn't see much results.  We finally found a formula for lactose sensitivity and his spitting up decreased dramatically within the next day or 2.  DS has had 2 colds and is teething now.  I feel that he did spit up more with the colds and that it seemed kind of snotty.  Sometimes there would be chunks of phlegm in it, but only once or twice.  He has really been teething the past few days and he's spitting up more and it's watery.

Hope your LO feels better soon!
