lesbian non-fiction

A few months ago we discussed good lesbian non-fiction. I have tried to find that post, but can't seem to locate it. Now, that I have a Kindle, I am looking for some decent books. I have ready very few LGBT books, but thought I would give it a try. :) suggestions?

Re: lesbian non-fiction

  • I really enjoyed "Hit By A Farm" which was written by Catherine Friend, a lesbian in rural Minnesota.  It's her memoir of buying a farm with her partner.  She has a few other books as well.

Also, I haven't read it, but Zach Walls has a book out called My Two Moms. He's the inspiring college student whose speak to his city council went viral.  I imagine it's inspiring:)

  • Like Me by Chely Wright was a great book and was my very first "lesbian non fiction".....I really loved it! When I came out I asked my mom to read it too.

Also Portia De Rossi's book Unbearable Lightness is also really good. Its a mix between her battle with an eating disorder and her coming out story. Its really well written.

  • Oops. I meant fiction! That is what I get for talking and posting simultaneously. But those books look good! I loved Chely Wright's movie.

I second this! I was actually surprised how much I liked Portia's book. But it was good...

  • Fiction:

I have a soft spot for the Beebo Brinkler series by Ann Bannen. Classic lesbian lit but I love it!

My Favourites though are Solitaire by Kelley Eskridge and Bottle Rocket Hearts by Zoe Whittall. "Solitaire" is one I got for 3.99 in the sale bin at the local women's bookstore and it is so good. So much so that I bought another copy to lend out... Highly recommended.

I look forward to reading your recs!

  • Here are some of my favorites authors and their genres.

Gerri Hill - She has great murder/mystery/cop books.  She has a couple of series and really enjoys crossing characters but not in a way that you have to read other books.  She does it in a way that makes you want to read the other books.  She also has some really good romances.  She loves to write stories either in Colorado or Texas so if you are regionally from these areas it's pretty cool how accurate she is in the people/places. Her books are medium in size and can easily be read in an afternoon (200-300 pages).  Some of hers will be hard to put down.

Karin Kallmaker -  She mainly writes romances although hers are shallow romances.  She can really develop a story, make you connect.  My only complaint (not really a complaint) is her books are fast reads and smaller in size.

Radclyffe - Her books are amazing!  They are a bit longer and she used to be a surgeon.  Most of her books deal with a medical setting.  They are all romances but it doesn't overtake the story. She also has a series called the Honor Series and these are pretty good.  If you are into it, she also has several fictional erotica books.  They are some of the better written ones and aren't that cheesy.

Ronica Black - She has a two book series (currently writing the third) that starts with In Too Deep.  These books mix murder, romance and erotica the best I have read in the lesbian fiction world.  These two books will draw you in from the beginning and leave you guessing until the very end.  She has some fiction as well that are romances.  Just be advised she is a racy writer and her trademark is her erotica in her fiction books.  Also she can explore some more "taboo" sides of sexual relations between women in her books such as in her book  Wild abandon.

For fast romance reads (less than 200 pages) check out Frankie J Jones, Peggy J Herring, Julie Cannon, Jackie Calhoun, Linda Hill, Kim Baldwin etc.  Most of these are what I would call sweet romances and warm and fuzzies.

For adventure books - KG McGreggor, Kenna White (a lot of adventure based books for the traveler!)

For humor and family - Saxxon Bennet.  She has two books I love Family Affair (ttc and pregnancy) and Back Talk (coming out later in life).  She loves to incorporate humor into her books in a way that will make you literally laugh out loud.  They are also fairly short books.

Also another book some here may really enjoy is Winds of Heaven by Kate Sweeny that deals with a woman pregnant with a toddler and a loner are thrown together in a journey that forms a family.   It's an amazing mix of hardship, humor and romance that I have read this book probably 100 times already and it's always on my night stand.

I highly recommend checking out Bella Books or Bold Stroke books.  They are the two largest publications for LGBT (mainly lesbian as its lesbian owned) publishers.  They have bios on the authors and the best descriptions of each book.  You can get all of their books off amazon or directly from them in ebook format.

I will leave it here for now lol.   We read so much but I still feel like there are so many authors out there to discover!
