WWS12D to dr or not to dr

So this is about my toddler, not the little guy. My daughter is 21 months. She has been coughing for over a week with no other cold symptoms, she has some allergies so I thought that was all it was. The last couple of days though, she coughs and tears run down her face. Sometimes she coughs so much she spits out this clear mucous looking stuff. Does that mean its in her lungs? I've been hesitant to go to the dr because they usually don't do anything, just recommend the humidifier and time, but obviously, if its in her lungs, I need to take her and I will. What do you think? To dr or not to dr?

  • From what you've described, I'd be calling the doc. Let them know you've tried all the normal suggestions but it is getting worse.

  • A had this and they gave antibotics for a sinus infection.  I don't know if that is because they wanted to avoid her getting anything else at such a young age but it helped (a lot!).  Can you call and ask? FTR, when she coughed I could hear and feel it in her chest/lungs.  They said she looked and sounded good, like it was all clear.  We even went for a 2nd opinion because I didn't know how THAT sounded "good".

  • Sounds like us! DD had a cough for over a week, just like that. A couple times she actually threw up from coughing. They couldn't do anything for her. The worst part was she never got 100 percent and then got a nasty bug with high fever for five days with a worse cough! It's ALMOST gone now.
You might want to at least call.

  • Yes, I'd go.

  • lift up her shirt and watch her stomach when she breathes, if her whole chest is "restricting" (that's what doctors call it, basically if you can see her taking very deep breaths) then definitely go in, they might be able to get her hooked up to a nebulizer, or give her something if there is fluid in her lungs

  • I would go. Let the doctor know that you tried everything for a week and it is getting worse.

  • It doesn't necessarily mean it's in her lungs, but she could be draining (from sinuses or ears) and is coughing because of that and getting some of it up.  Regardless--I'd say call the doc for a persistent cough lasting over a week.  I recently had a persistent cough, no other symptoms, and it was an ear infection--the drainage gave me a cough!

  • I would go. J had a cough and a fever and the cough wouldn't go away. Turns out she had an ear infection.

  • Thanks guys. I just called and they said to use the nebulizer, which we have, as needed and monitor her. Hopefully it'll get better over the next few days.
  • I'd call the dr, there's so much crap going around.

  • IMO if you have to think "Hmm, should I go to the doctor?" you probably should. Even if you get told the same thing as always. Concerning kids, I'd rather be safe than sorry.

  • I would definitely call the doctor. Kind of sounds like it could be bronchitits with the coughing but that's just how mine always appears.
