Re: Cranial Helmet Sleep help

  • no, just wanted to say sorry.  Our DD had no problem wearing her helmet to bed.  In fact, I think I was more bothered by the helmet than she was.  Hope it gets better for you soon!

  • have you given it a week yet? i felt after a week of wearing it, he was back to sleeping through the night with it on... there is definitely an adjustment period for some babies... we have been through two helmets and both helmets we had a rough sleeping week. :)

  • Its been about a month now that he had it.  Earlier onit seemed as he would have hit and miss nights, but the miss nights were not that bad.  Recently he got the helmet adjusted and has been teething.

So during the day he wears it fine and even will take a sleep in it for an hour or two.

Heres the thing when he goes down at night, usually I feed him in the living room on his chair/podster, and then when hes in his sleep ill pick him up and put him in his bed.  so hes aleep but on an inclide on his podster.  when i put him in his ed he lays flat and is only there for a few minugtes before he cries.  And then he wont settle for the rest of the night.

So we end up, or i should say me, taking him back to the couch and we sleep there together which does wonders for my back, not...or we bring him into our bed, and we have a queen...so limited room.

  • we didn't have sleep issues with DS helmet, but now that he has it off, he hits his head on the crib and wakes up. the helmet actually helped in that aspect.

  • i wonder if it could be something else other than the helmet... teeth or reflux?

my mom really thought that his head readjusting in the helmet could be painful (although i wasn't totally on board with her thought)... but i remember giving him some tylenol a few nights and that worked like a charm and we went through the adjustment period a little easier. good luck and hope you get some good sleep soon! :)

  • DS hasn't had any issues sleeping in his helmet but I'm wondering if, when you take it off, he has any pressure spots that maybe are bothering him? We just got his helmet adjusted Friday and pretty much all weekend we only had it on him to sleep because he had some pretty serious redness going on. I emailed his orthotist pictures today and I'm waiting to see what she says. Otherwise if he likes sleeping on the incline maybe try putting a folded up towel underneath one end of his mattress?

  • DD had a helmet when she was a baby. She didn't have any issues sleeping with it beyond the first night or two. If its been a month I think maybe something else is bothering him, like teething, or like a pp mentioned, maybe there's a pressure point bothering him. Could definatly also be reflux.
