Those with thumbsuckers come in

Luca is a hardcore thumbsucker, only his right one. I've noticed within the last week, since it has gotten colder, the skin on his thumb is now cracked and peeling. It doesn't seem to be bothering him yet, but it looks terrible. I don't know that I am ready to wean him from thumbsucking; I love that he can self soothe when he does it. The past few nights I have put aquaphor on it when he goes to bed, but I don't know how long it stays on for before his thumb goes right back in.

Anyone else going through this or have any tips?

Re: Those with thumbsuckers come in

  • My oldest is a thumb sucker. There's not much else you can do about it.

  • my daughter is a HUGE thumb sucker.  she sucks both, and they have both gotten badly chapped and dry, very sore looking.  the pediatrician said aquaphor is good during the day (when she sucks it less) but not to use at bedtime because she will suck it right off and it shouldn't be ingested. she said at night to put vegetable or canola oil on it...this will lubricate the thumb and keep in moisturized, and these oils aren't harmful for her to suck.  tried that 3 nights ago and it's made a huge difference! her little thumbs look much better :)
  • Thanks for the tip, I will try that tonight! I didn'tthink aquaphor would be bad to be ingested, I figured it was just a vaseline, but if the oils work I would much rather use that.
