Tummy troubles. Advice needed.

Despite using gas drops, and burping him thoroughly, William is a really gassy baby, and I can tell it causes him pain. He will grunt and strain when he is trying to fart or poop, and it makes him cry. He isn't constipated tho his bowel movements are still very soft and runny and mustard colored. And he makes 7 or so wet and 34 poopy diapers a day. Just the act of farting or pooping bothers him. And I can frequently hear his tummy rumbling. Now, while BFing, after 610 minutes he will start pulling away and crying, and then spend the rest of his 1520 minutes popping on and off the boob, alternating eating with crying. Anybody have experience with this? Do you think I should try probiotics? I just want to make sure he is still eating enough. My supply is more than adequate, as I can still pump a good 6 ounces a day, at one sitting, even while EBFing him. He is also on Axid for reflux. He hated Zantac, so my ped switched him. Any ideas?

  • Id love to hear replies too. The tummy pain actually wakes him up in the motn. He finally poops or farts and goes back to sleep.

I suspect my ds's problems come from my fast letdown, but it seems a bit extreme if you ask me. I feel bad for the poor guy.

  • I would talk to your pedi. It sounds like the reflux med dosage may need to be increased. We had to do that for my DS because the original dosage shortly after birth when he was 9 lbs wasn't enough once he hit 12 lbs. we had a lot of the same issues with eating that you are having, although I am unsure of the pooping discomfort. My DS is an every other day pooper!

I used little remedies gripe water to help settle his stomach when he seemed uncomfortable while we waited to see the doctor and that seemed to help him a ton.

  • My DS has the same issues. I pump and mix one ounce of Gerber Gentle formula in with the breastmilk and that has helped a ton.  We were using the Enfamil Gentelease in with the breastmilk per the doctor and it helped some but switched to the Gerber Gentle after trying the sample.  We hardly have to give the gas drops anymore.
