Boring: What is on your mantle?

DH just vetoed my pervious decorations - I need ideas. I am a minimalist, so this is hard for me.

We also do not have a mantle or a fireplace, but we have two long bookshelves above our tv that almost take up the length of the wall. One has three pictures from the family photos we took in November. The other has a couple of baby pictures of DS. DH actually made a comment the other day, that I need to put some more decorations up there like candles or something.

I used to have pictures EVERYWHERE, but I have really cut back a bit.

A little clock in the middle, a little candle holder on either side of that, and on each end a picture frame.

At the moment: Christmas pictures of our son, a giant vase full of giltter (red, green, silver) old Christmas lights and pine cones and stockings.

Tomorrow? I have no idea. I'm starting over.

Try to make art or decorations out of things that mean something to you and your DH. Maybe you can make handprints of the boys and display it up there with a pic of them.
Other ideas I love are framed key of the first home you had together with the address written under it.
Maybe something that represents where you met or something that is special to you two as a couple. It doesn't have to make sense to anyone but you. Things like this will have more meaning and will be more than decor or art that you would get somewhere.
Just suggestions.

I love all of these ideas! However, I suck at this stuff. We are still living in our first house, would the key thing be weird?

I think I am going to have to troll home goods until I find something. I don't think pictures will work - it is up kinda high, so I must find random accessories. Maybe all in one color palette? It is a stone fireplace (light colored) and the mantle is darker wood.
