How much milk is your LO getting?

We switched DD to whole cow's milk gradually over the course of a few weeks after she turned one.  She gets three meals of solid foods and has still been drinking about five to six six ounce bottles of milk each day too (and we've been working gradually on switching to a sippy).

Tonight, I was reading What To Expect in the First Year and learned that she's apparently only supposed to be getting about 2 cups of milk/day.  Wha?  Now I feel like an idiot.  She's been getting way more than that!

How have you guys handled this?  Did you immediately take your LOs down to 2 cups of milk/day just after they turned one?   Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

  • N was drinking a lot of milk at first. She still nurses during the night too. I would slowly reduce the amount of milk your offering, offer water, and give her more to eat at meal time. You might also do a couple of snacks. N has 3 meals and 2-3 smaller snacks. Also, check with your pedi to find out how much milk she should be getting for her height/weight etc.

  • Our doc told us as long as he gets a few ounces with every meal he's good.  She didn't specifically give me a # of oz, but C gets about 16-18oz a day I would guess.  Sometimes a little more, but we only give him a sippy with milk at meals, otherwise he has water during day he's allowed to carry around house with him or keep on a lower shelf in kitchen where he can reach.  Occasionally I'll water down some apple juice for him & he sucks that down immediately!

  • I think the recommendation is 20 to 24 oz/day. DD usually gets right around 24 oz of milk, 4 oz of juice, and water. She also eats 3 meals and has 2 snacks a day.
  • I wouldn't base anything on "What to Expect." My doctor advises 1620oz of milk a day. So 2 cups would be on the low end. LBB still nurses about twice a day and gets 8oz of
    WCM in addition to that.

  • Since Alastair is able to get breastmilk, he drinks 3 to 4 10 oz bottles per day again. We have started to mix that with WCM, that is the only reason why I know how much of that he is getting: about 8 to 12 oz (there are approx 2oz of WCM in his bottles). He gets three meals and snacks during the day as well and has a water bottle, which he uses at his leisure.

I will check with his doctor on his 15 months appointment if he is still ok with it, but on the 12 months one he was.

  • I wouldn't go by that book. Talk to your Pedi. Mine says they need 16-24 ounces a day at this point. DS also eats three meals and a snack each day plus as much water as he wants.
  • I've given up keeping track. We introduced WCM at 11 months and for the longest time she never drank more than 7 oz a day. Now that she's weaned it about 13 oz max. That's all the fluids she gets the entire day, meaning that I offer them but that's all she wants, and she seems to be doing fine. I do try to get a lot of salmon, tofu, cheese and yogurt into her diet to make up for the loss of good fats, and she gets oatmeal made with WCM every other day.

  • Our pedi recommended 15-20oz/day.  She's probably getting a tad more than that (maybe 22-24oz), but we're really trying to cut down to under 20oz, because dairy really constipates her.
