New and Nervous, twins with one sac

Hi all.  This is my first post.  I just had my first ultrasound two days ago and imagine my shock when they found two heartbeats.  Yikes!  Even though we were trying to conceive for a few months, I was barely used to the idea of even having one.  I feel totally unprepared for two.  As of today I am 7 weeks along.

The ultrasound only showed one sac though and that had the doctor concerned.  I started reading up on MoMo babies and it made me a little scared.  I have to go for a "super" sonogram within the next two weeks for confirmation.  I would appreciate hearing from anyone else that has experienced this.  Hopefully it will calm my fears.  At least prepare me for what to expect.  Thank you.

Re: New and Nervous, twins with one sac

  • Congratulations on your twins and welcome!

I have not been in your shoes, but I believe a number of MoM's here were originally told they were having mo-mo twins only to see the dividing membrane at a later visit.  It seems like the membrane is so thin that sometimes they can't see it well.

Good luck with your next appointment and feel free to update the board. You will find support here.

  • Congrats and welcome!  It's very possible that they will find a membrane between them because you are still very early and it can be hard to see until near the 2nd trimester so I wouldn't get too freaked out about the momo twins just yet.  I had my first u/s at 10w5d and we could barely see a membrane it was so thin it looked like a dotted line!  Anyway yes there are risks in these types of pregnancies but getting yourself set with a good team of Dr.s is the best start!  Good luck!

  • Hi this is my first post as well and I am in the same boat my doctor is sending me to a specialist to double check and see if it just wasn't visible on the firsts view.
  • I had my first u/s at 7 weeks and the doc couldn't see the membrane either.  We had a more sophisticated u/s at the MFM one week later and the membrae was clear as day.  I have read stories of the membrane being discovered as late as 20 weeks.

    Best of luck!

  • Thank you for all the welcoming responses and shared experiences. I apologize for the lack of response on my side.  I was trying to keep busy away from anything "baby" related until I had my super-ultrasound.

I went for the 2nd sonogram yesterday and they only saw one baby.  There was a questionable blob above the fetus and two extra doctors were brought in for second opinions.  Eventually they all agreed, there was only one baby.  The extra blob was the cord.  They said they would talk to my doctor and confirm what it was she saw on the first ultrasound and then have her call me.  I don't really understand how it went from twins to just one.  The doctor yesterday said it was common to lose of the twins early on.  But wouldn't I have known?  Now just waiting...
