Thoughts on buying a new mattress?

DH and I are long overdue and of course everything is on sale right now. I've been extremely uncomfortable at night in the hip area, I'm constantly flipping from side to side but it really only gets better when I get out of bed. I've tried pillows ect and nothing really helps. I'm not sure a new mattress is the ticket to a better nights sleep as this just might be typical pregnancy stuff, but I'm sure it can't hurt.
My concern is offgassing, chemicals ect. I tend to have very sensitive skin, and the last thing I need is an allergic reaction and I also worry about effects on the baby. I absolutely believe that chemicals can cause many conditions that we just don't have research to back up. That being said, I've spent most of my life sleeping on regular old mattresses so I'm wondering if I'm just working myself up over nothing.
Any advice or suggestions? I'm leaning towards getting one and then letting it air out for several days before we begin using it. The baby will be getting a naturpedic mattress

I also just purchased a Snoogle pregnancy pillow and it was also a great investment. It's shaped like a "C" and I can use the one pillow no matter which side I lie on-- one part of the "C" goes under my head, the other goes between my legs to take pressure off my hips. If I lie on my left side, the long side of the "C" goes behind my back, which supports my back and keeps me from lying completely on my back. And when I roll over to my right side, the long side of the "C" supports my growing belly.
I love the combination of the tempurpedic mattress and the snoogle.

I think you're on the money with just going ahead and buying a new one, then letting it air out for a couple of days. You want to be as comfortable as possible, because it's also not good for you or baby if you can't get your rest! And, I hate to say it, but the discomfort only gets worse from here. Have you thought about a Sleep Number bed? We have one and love it, especially since we can each adjust our own side to our comfort. I'm not sure if it would be any better in the chemicals department, but maybe it would since it is filled with air.

I second the good pregnancy pillow investment. I was actually given one by a friend that didn't like it (weird). Mine is similar to what the PP described but is more of a horse shoe shape with the top of the horse shoe at my head and then the rest supports my back or goes between my legs. It sounds weird but it has totally changed my life!
That being said, I believe that a good mattress is important. I also have sensitive skin and worry about chemicals and weird fabrics. I also slept on questionable mattresses my entire life but when I could afford to buy my own, as oppose to hand-me-downs, we got a really good one. It has bamboo in it so it is naturally antibacterial. It might be a Serta? but I know for sure we got it from Sears.

We got our mattress at Bob's Discount Furniture (not sure where you are, but it's a local chain here in New England) and their "Bob-o-pedic" mattresses are literally the same exact thing as Tempurpedics. The guys who delivered our mattress were telling us how they picked ours up from the same factory that makes the Tempurpedics and how they are exactly the same thing, except for the label slapped on at the end (they've seen the process).
But ours cost about half, maybe. I think our entire King size bed (mattress, box spring, headboard, frame, and mattress protector) cost us around $2000 or maybe $2500-- including the fee for delivery. And it's a nice frame and headboard! And the guys set it up, too.
As for the chemicals, I think the tempurpedic mattresses don't have the same chemical components as the standard mattresses. I definitely didn't notice as strong a "new bed" smell-- and we also got a hypoallergenic mattress protector, which probably helped.
With my fibromyalgia and arthritis, having the right mattress has made a world of difference, even though it took a week or so to get used to it. And the Snoogle pillow has made a huge difference with the pregnancy-- especially now that I've reached the point that I can't lie on my back without risking diminished blood flow to the baby...

Thanks Ladies, I think I'm just being a nervous nellie, we need to bite the bullet and buy either a mattress or a really nice mattress pad but I'm leaning towards mattress because once the little boy is here I'm definately not going to want to spend the extra money.
On Xmas, i was at my sister's and not feeling that great after dinner so I went to lie down, next thing I know DH is waking me up an 1.5 hours later, I was so comfortable, my sister asked me later how I liked the mattress because they had just gotten a tempurpedic, I have to admit it was pretty awesome!
