Sleep training: moving baby to bedroom on a different floor???

DS has coslept with us from day one. We are having MAJOR challenges with him sleeping lately, and I think it is time to sleep-train:(. We have 3 bedrooms: 2 bedrooms upstairs: master and DS#1's bedroom, and one bedroom downstairs. We were planning on having the boys share their room, but DS#2 can not do that until  he sleeps more than 2 hours at a time because he will wake #1. We obviously can't let DS#2 CIO in our bedroom, so I was thinking of moving him downstairs....wdyt?? It will break my heart, but I am not sure how else I can do it. I have video monitors and a blow up mattress if necessary. I really don't want to be that far away from him, so I may also camp out on the couch for a few...Anyone else done somthing similar?

  • Exactly our issue. We and DS1 are upstairs and baby is downstairs right below us. We are also on day 2 of CIO and it sucks, but the situation of him being downstairs is fine. He isn't waking DS1 and we have a queen bed in baby's room because it used to be the guest room so I have been pretty much sleeping in there. Our issue is that he wants to eat all night long so I'm working on consolidating feedings and just getting to him quickly to soothe him when I won't be feeding him. So far, so good. When I have to let him cry a bit I go to the family room which is downstairs too. We also have a video monitor so I spy on him.

To make a short story long, I was worried about him being downstairs but its been fine. It's not like he's in a separate house or something!

  • That video monitor is your best friend.  With that, he might as well be sleeping in the same room with you.  He won't know the difference.  He'll be fine.
