Tips for BFing after C/S

So, doc scheduled my RCS and said that unless I go into labor before that date then this is the official day. So my VBAC plans are essentially nixed. I'm ok with this as long as I can establish BFing better than with DD.

With DD I didn't see her for over 12 hours, I was looped out on meds, felt like crap, ect. She latched once the whole time. I tried pumping, but my spinal headache made it murder to keep my head up. So I dried up within 2-3 weeks.

Any tips to help establish a good BFing relationship with a RCS? I really really want to BF this baby until he is ready to ween. It's very important to me. Thank you.

Re: Tips for BFing after C/S

  • Mostly just to BF early and often. After the first night the only pain meds I had were IV ibuprofen so I was pretty alert.  I would insist on keeping baby with you barring any medical need so that you can BF on demand from the start. Have someone with you at all times to help get LO to you.

I agree with laid back BFing. I also had some success with the football hold anytime I was sitting up.

  • i was put under complete anesthesia for my C/S. i was in and out within 45 minutes, and was on some great pain killers. but the nurses at my hospital were very pro BF, and very supportive, they actually helped me get set up in the foot ball hold, even tho LO did not like to latch on. i have very large breasts and nipples, and LO had a small mouth. so we kinda did 50/50 BF and formula for about a month. then slowly did more and more BF until she was weaned off of formula completely at about 6 weeks. i was and am still unable to do many BF positions, due to my large breasts, but i am getting there, i can do a laying down position, but it requires me to stay awake and keep excess boob out of her face, and nose, so she can breath! LOL!

i know there are many positions you can try. i know for me, we had a hard time at first due to her small mouth, but we just kept at it, pumped when i needed to, when my nipples both bled, and BF the rest of the time. i would say just keep at it, and try different positions.

I didn't have any issues BFing after my c/s.  I nursed as soon as I was in the recovery room and continued to put DD to the breast at least every two hours.  I was fine sitting up somewhat reclined and used my Boppy.

    Exactly this.

I had a c-section with spinal anesthesia, and I BF DS within one hour of his delivery, when I was still in the recovery room.  The nurse turned me on my side and I did side-lying nursing w/DS.  After I went to my room, I was able to sit up in bed and nursed DS with either cross-cradle hold or football hold.  The hospital I was at is very pro-BFing; the nurses are great at helping DS latch on.

I agree with this. I had an unexpected C/S after a vaginal delivery with my first. I didnt have much more difficulty nursing this baby than with a vaginal delivery. I HIGHLY reccommend a My Breast Friend pillow, you can strap it on and tighten it so it doesnt move around. I promised myself with this baby that I would learn how to nurse "side lying" or laying down asap. So by the second night we were nursing laying down at night. That helped immensely.

I suggest that since you wont be needing labor support that you get the help of a postpartum doula. She can also offer breastfeeding support as well as a host of other services.

Get the help of a LC asap and you should be just fine!
