Working Moms whose babes have had firsts without you there

Maybe this will make some of you feel better. Being a SAHM, I kind of made the assumption that I would be present for all of my kids' firsts, but alas, I've missed most of them.

This morning Miles rolled. I've been waiting for him to do this for.weeks. I laid him on his back under his play gym and went to go get Wyatt breakfast, when I walked back in the living room he was on his belly, completely flipped around. Then I got to thinking about all of the times I missed Wyatt's firsts.

Rolling: Laid him on his belly, H said 'what if he rolls?', I said 'Nah, he won't be doing that for a long time yet' (he was only 6 weeks old). I walked into the kitchen to get a bowl of ice cream and H yells 'Get back in here! He just rolled!'

Lifting self up on furniture: I had gone to the grocery store to have some me time. I had just picked up a jar of pickles when H called to tell me 'you won't believe what your kid is doing right now'... he had pulled himself up on the coffee table and started walking along it (kind of).

Step-taking: Wyatt was 7.5 months old when he started taking small steps, so it came as a huge surprise to everyone. It was the day before our first anniversary and I had a rocking headache that I wanted to get rid of before our date that night, so I took a nap at my in law's. When I woke up everyone was beaming and gushing about how Wyatt had taken three steps towards his Dad WHILE I SLEPT! Gah!

Walking: Wyatt started walking on my birthday at 9 months old... this day deserves a gif story, I swear... H's uncle had stopped by and wanted me to delete his online dating profile. So while I was f*cking around on plenty of fish, Lance put Wyatt down and he walked across the friggen room!!! I've never been so simultaneously proud and pissed off at the world.

Yeah... that day is totally getting a gif story later.

Anyway, so I thought I would share that in case some working Moms are feeling cheated by not being able to be there. I know it's not the same, but unfortunately babies can be douche bags and do it whether you SAH or not.

  • So what made me LOL at this story was that you were at the grocery store to get time to yourself... There's an "e" card that says. Motherhood: when vacation feels more like a job and going to Target by yourself feels like a vacation.

  • Thanks for this! I don't work in the summers because I'm a teacher so I'm hoping I at least get to see his first steps.

  • Thanks! Although I've told DC not to tell us if she does anything with them first. Then, I'll think it's her first time and I won't know any different!

  • DS rolled over for the first time with me sitting right beside him and I missed it. DH and I were talking and we heard a little thump and realized DS was suddenly on his back, we both missed it.

I don't know why, but it doesn't bother me if I don't see her "firsts" first because when I do see them, it will still be the first time that I've seen them, if that makes any sense, ha! I am not going to feel bad if she does something at daycare first before she does something at our house. For some reason it just doesn't phase me.

~after 34 cycles we finally got our 2nd little bundle of joy~

  • Thanks for this! I'm torn between wanting the baby sitter to tell me about Liam 's firsts verses not knowing and taking what I see as "the first " time he does something. The sitter just told me the other day DS rolls over back to tummy. I have yet to see this and I am a little disappointed.
