question about smoke

My LO received several outfits, a doll, and a teddy bear from my DH's Aunt. The problem is, this aunt smokes. I've washed the outfits three times and they still smell of smoke. And the doll and teddy bear just reek. I could just put the aside somewhere in the basement, but I feel bad as it was really nice of my DH's Aunt to give these to our LO for Christmas. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get smoke out of clothes and toys? thanks in advance for any help.

Re: question about smoke

  • dang, I can't believe after 3 washes it still smells. Do you use "good" detergent? I use Tide with Febreze and when we have stuff come from my MIL, who smokes in her house(gag) after one wash its no longer noticable

Oh I was using the Tide Gentle...maybe I should try the regular Tide? I never even thought of that....I think i'm going to put the doll and teddy bear outside and try to air them out.

  • Try 1 part vodka/rubbing alcohol and 3 parts water solution. Spray stuff over with a spray bottle and let dry. Do it again if needed and then wash.

  • Just run the clothes through a rinse cycle or two with vinegar. Tide isn't going to neutralize the odor, just mask it. I use vinegar on dh's washable fire gear and it gets rid of the smell.
  • Try Dawn dish detergent and hang them outside to dry.

  • I'd try a different detergent.

  • I would use just regular Tide. If that doesn't get the smell out, I wouldn't use them. I don't care who the clothes were from...if they smelled like smoke, they wouldn't be going near my baby.
