Does anyone have tricks to get LOs to take prescriptions? About a month ago my DD had pick eye. When we took her to the pedi, we learned she also had an ear infection. The pedi prescribed an antibiotic and when we told him how much she hates taking meds, he said we could put it in her bottle. 2 weeks later, we went for a follow-up. The ear infection was still there. He changed the Rx and told us to come back in 2 weeks for another follow-up. So we took her back on Thursday (this time we requested a different doctor because we don't like/trust the other one). The infection is gone, but there is still fluid in the ears. We told her the 1st pedi said we could put the Rx in the bottle and she was annoyed...we diluted the meds, so they weren't effective, etc... So, she gave us a new Rx and told us to give it to her out of the dropper or a nipple for 4 days. I tried both of these. With the nipple, she gagged and threw up on me (like actually blew chunks!). I tried again with the dropper and she started gagging. If you have any suggestions here, I'd really appreciate it. I'm afraid she'll go back to daycare on Wednesday and the infection will come right back.
TIA!
Re: Help my DD take her Rx!
I still suggest what the first Dr said about putting it in a bottle. The issue is that you have to be sure that your DD drinks the whole thing within a short time period. What we have done in the past is mix it with a smaller amount of WCM (like 2 oz.) so we can be sure DS finishes it quickly.
Based on what you have told me I am also questioning why the more recent Dr put your DD back on antibiotics when the infection is gone. This is extremely questionable to me. It is becoming a more common practice to wait out ear infections anyway, as they often resolve themselves within a week or so, and this method doesn't contribute to overuse of antibiotics.
I find it easier to use a dosing syringe so that you can get the medicine closer to the back of the mouth. Medicine cups are not as accurate as the medicine spoons or syringes that are available at the pharmacy. We actually don't recommend using them when families ask for them and we don't keep any in the pharmacy to give out.
This is N too. Are they flavoring the meds? I just say "mmm" and she opens her mouth for the dropper and says "mmm" too.
I hope you have better luck with it. Being puked on is no fun!
DD loves her medicine too... Arythromycin flavored like bubble gum I think... the standard flavor, nothing added. And Advil white grape might as well be dessert. LOL.
