Shots and no Tylenol

Lo had her four month shots yesterday and she refuses to let me give her Tylenol. Every time I get the dropper near her mouth or in it she gags and then throws up.
Is there anything else I can give her for her discomfort? I usually try to keep it as natural as possible but She's obviously in pain and uncomfortable.

Re: Shots and no Tylenol

  • Are you putting it in too far? Try giving it in a syringe instead of a dropper and just squirt it into her cheek. If it tastes like strawberry or whatever, she should be all for it. It sounds to me like the dropper is shooting out the medicine too fast/too much at a time or you're putting it too far back. When you use a syringe, just push about .3 / .5 ML at a time.

If that doesn't work and you need to give it to her, do it like they do at the doctor's office with the virus. Squeeze her cheeks together, put the med in the back of her mouth, and lightly blow on her face. It'll cause her to swallow.

  • We had to give medicine a lot a few weeks ago when LO was on antibiotics. Here's the 2 methods we found worked best for us:

#1 - Cut the end off a pacifier, stick the dropper through the pacifier and slowly dispense the medicine. Like this: https://pinterest.com/pin/206180489161157482/ (Our medicine dropper was bigger around, so I had to shove to get it in the pacifier, but it worked.)

#2 - Use the medicine dropper in the side of their mouth and give as little as you can dispense at a time, immediately follow up with a pacifier for a minute or two. Repeat until medicine is gone.

The trick to both is to give as little medicine as possible at a time; more medicine stays in the baby that way. It would take 5-10 minutes to get the dose in, but that was better than having a gagging baby and not knowing how much he swallowed versus spitting out.

  • Thanks I've never seen them give meds like that at the doc office. I'll have to give it a try.
She won't even let me get it in her mouth before she's gagging. I think it might be the smell or taste. I had to give her some gas drops and she took those just fine.

What flavor is it? The gas drops taste like bubblegum so that's the flavor of Tylenol we give DS and he loves it. Maybe try buying the bubblegum one?

  • Maybe try another flavor? When LO was sick, the antibiotics were cherry flavor and our Tylenol was bubblegum flavor, I could tell he liked the bubblegum a lot more than the cherry.

Edit:  anbeck4 beat me to it! :)

Ours was a flavor issue too. I was using a brand called Little Remedies and he gagged at the sight of the syringe. Switched to grape tylenol and he loved it.

The little remedies brand is what we have too! Ok off to get a different flavor

  • I put meds in a bottle nipple and give them when he's on his changing table contained. He used to gag because it comes out too fast from the dropper or syringe. If you have any of the free medela ones from the hospital, they are fast so it's easier for thick medicine.

Then and now. How did my boy get so big?

  • DS refuses to take any medicine from a dropper so we mix his medicine with 1 oz of breast milk or pedialite and give it to him in a bottle.
