CVS Test?

Anyone definitely not doing it? Anyone definitely doing it? Anyone still on the fence? My mom didn't with me or my brothers, and DH and I are considering not having it done. I'd have to have it done during my second appointment (January 7th) because I'll already be 11w3d-ish (between 11-12 weeks, right? correct me if I'm wrong!). Just looking for some different opinions, since we still haven't totally made up our minds :)

Re: CVS Test?

  • The chance of m/c is rather high after a CVS, so I would want to carefully weigh what benefits I would receive over the risks involved. I would say I have a 99% chance of not doing this test.

  • I didn't do any with the first and I'm not going to now.  We have no family history of anything the test would pick up so we didn't see how it would be worth the risk.

  • I decided not to do any of the genetic testing. Since I can't get a definite answer until later on in pregnancy, abortion would NOT be an option and I'd hate to be stressed/anxious the whole time.

  • My Mom worked for an OB/GYN for 15 years.  She said a lot of the test they do are for very high risk patients and not necessary for normal pregnancies.  She says they are "money makes" because you can't really do anything if you do have abnormal tests and you can also get some of the same results with ultra sounds later on.    She is a bit more old fashioned, but I decided to leave it in God's hands and let fate be fate.  Ultimately all is in his hands and he has a plan for us all.  So, I am praying instead of testing Smile

  • For us, we are opting out of testing because no matter what we are not aborting the baby. If something is wrong, most likely it will be seen on the 20 week ultrasound which will give us time to plan, but we are praying and believing for a healthy baby.
  • I had an NT scan, but I wouldn't do a CVS unless there was some very compelling medical reason to do it. The risk of miscarriage totally scares me.

  • You didn't offer any particular history on why you would need CVS.  Are you over 35, because this test isn't routine for most women.

There are less invasive tests and procedures even if you are over 35, like screening bloodwork first and then consider an amnio if there are any major concerns.  With CVS, the risk of miscarriage is not high (1/300 reportedly) but it is higher than with amnio.

This. Only if a nonevasive test showed a concern.

  • I haven't had one but my friend/coworker had one done with both her pregnancies. Her first pregnancy she had an NT scan in which the results came back with a 1 in 30 chance of downs. She opted for the CVS test that day and it came back negative. Then a few years later she was pregnant with twins and just skipped right to the CVS test...which I heard is risky for twins. I guess the miscarriage rate is about the same as an amnio but it's done ealier. This site says it's about 1 in 100, and riskier if it's done through the cervix as opposed through the abdomen.

eta: different sites, different stats but the risks are obviously there.

  • I get the NT but skip the rest. At first I didn't want to do any of them because it wouldn't matter to me even if my child did have anything, my child is my child no matter what. But an OB nurse friend suggested we do the NT because it will show spinobifita sp? If a baby has that a planned csection can be the difference between walking and not walking. That was enough for me to make the decission.
