April 2012 Moms

giving up

I have been EP'ing since we had latch issues right after Nate was born. Over the past 6 weeks or so I have been making less and less milk (this from the mama that made 60-65 oz every day)....so I decided to start weaning. I am down to pumping twice a day, and about 12 oz of milk. I was hoping to make it to a year....Nate will be 9 months tomorrow. I feel so guilty. There is nothing I could do that my body was making my milk dry up....but I still feel so bad. Once my freezer full of milk is gone, we'll have to either go to formula or regular milk. *sigh*

Re: giving up

  • Holy crap - 60oz/day?  I think when I went back to work, my entire freezer 'stash' was 60oz!

Kudos to you for making it this long. If you were producing that much daily, I imagine that your 'stash' is probably quite large and you can continue to give him milk for quite awhile yet.  I'm getting to the same point though, where I'm not producing very much anymore.   I currently pump 2x/day at work and get about 8oz total wheras he is taking around 20oz at daycare.  We have been supplementing with formula since he was about 3mos old.   We just started solids 2x/day at daycare and at home for dinner, so I believe because of the solids, their milk intake should be slowing down

  • you silly woman!  I would kill for     12 ounces a DAY!!!! I have never pumped more than one to 1.5 ounces when I have pumped (so like 6oz plus bfing).  My Dr. told me not to worry, but I have supplemented since 5weeks.  If you are still ep;ing at all at this age, you should be damm proud!  Congrats to you mamma.  You worked hard at giving your baby soooo many benefits :-)

Its hard to think of weening, but its something we all have to do!  by the way,how many solids is Nate taking?  that usually slows down how much baby is actually depending on the milk supply... maybe what you are producing is all he will need?

  • EP-ing so SO HARD. Good for you for making it this far. I am proud of you!

  • That's insanely impressive. If it's any consolation (probably not), but my doctor told us at our 9mo checkup that we could start introducing WCM any time now, so your freezer stash should probably get you close to the switch, meaning less formula to buy.

    And happy 9 months!

  • I think it's wonderful that you made it this far. Try not to be too hard on yourself for weaning.

  • It is truly amazing that you have made it this long! I am also EPing and I just take it one day at a time. I am also in the process of slowly weaning. I just dropped to just a morning and night pump and have had to supplement with formula since a few weeks ago. It can be so hard but just think of all the benefits we have given our babies! Don't beat yourself up over this! You are doing and have done a GREAT job!

  • you EP for so long! that's awesome don't think of it as giving up... just moving on because your baby is growing up!

I also EP and it sucks. I got a bad period and then sick right after and my supply has tanked. It's stressing me out and I should just not care and supplement.

Easier said than done. Good for you!

  • Don't be sad. Be PROUD. You have nourished your baby for as long as your body could. I only wish I had that opportunity. He'll be fine. If it comes down to formula, or Cow's milk you can always add a session here and there to keep your supply up for contact.
