Gifts from Santa and traveling questions

For those of who spent Christmas Eve and day at someone else's house, did you bring all of Santa's gifts along with you to put under the tree wherever you stayed? I know it probably wasn't much of an issue this year with a 1 year old, but I was just wondering how this would work for the future when our LO's are more aware of gifts from Santa.

Re: Gifts from Santa and traveling questions

  • We haven't decided for sure if we will do gifts from Santa, but we definitely won't be taking gifts with us.  We have always designated a day before or after to do our Christmas at home.  If we do gifts from Santa I think we will just have the gifts be out when we arrive home.

  • I figure that MW and I will get our LO Santa gifts and I know that MIL will do the same thing.  We will not worry about it for a while.

  • We had our family Christmas the weekend before we left home to visit family for the holidays. Since she obviously doesn't associate Santa with gifts yet, it was no big deal and actually extended the gift-giving season for us all.

I'm not super big into Santa, and DH and I disagree on how much Santa we want to do, but I'm OK with my kids knowing that Mommy and Daddy get some of the gifts. So, if we continue to travel for the holidays, we will probably continue to do our gifts at home before Christmas, and those will be ones from Mommy and Daddy, not Santa.

  • We will bring them with us. When I was growing up, my parents would put boxes on the hitchhiker and tell me they were empty so we could bring Santa gifts home. My Uncle did the same with his family except with a top carrier.

Part of the magic for me was to wake up on Christmas morning and seeing that Santa had been there.  I want that for my family, too.

  • DH & I have traveled for the last 11 yrs to spend Christmas with family.  The last 2 yrs with LO.  We are so looking forward to not traveling next year and getting to spend Christmas morning at home with DS.  This year we left the presents at home since he has no association like pp mentioned.  However, if we do choose to travel in the future that would be something to think about.  I think we would pack them.  I would hate to think that a child might think they were naughty and Santa didn't bring him/her anything or having to wait until getting home to see if Santa stopped there even if we weren't home.  That might not be fun waiting with an upset child and visiting with family.
  • This year Santa came early to our house because I wanted to watch them open gifts before the became jaded with everyone else's gifts. Then we drove two hours to spend the holiday with our families. Seriously though something has to change for next year it's pretty much bs that we had to spend two separate days with my family and really only stayed at my mother in laws. I mean I understand that Christmas Eve has belonged to my father's family forever and since my dad passed when I was 13 I respect that but to have to add an extra day with my mother and sister is asinine.
