Question about naps

DD is 26 months soon. She won't nap until she's been awake 7 hours. A month or two ago it was 6 hours and that worked pretty well. But now she's napping late and waking late which means she's going to bed late. She goes to bed 4.5 hours after waking. I really want an earlier bedtime but nothing we do seems to work to adjust her schedule. What am I doing wrong?

Edit: she's also refused to nap the last 3 days. Then she crashed around noon today. I'm hoping its just Christmas excitement!

Re: Question about naps

  • Kieran goes down for nap and to bed at the same time every day.  If he wakes up at 7 or wakes up at 9 he still is in bed for nap by 12:30.  I don't give him a choice and although sometimes he fights it he's always asleep within 5 minutes or so.  Bedtime is always 7:30-8 even if he decides to nap until 5.

Maybe try more playground time or activities that might tire her out.

  • I pretty much do the same thing with DS.  He wakes up around 8:30 [lazybones] and naps around 12:30-2:30.  Then he goes to bed at 8.  We just don't give him a choice.  If he doesn't sleep, he at least lays in his crib and rests for quiet time for 2 hours.

  • Sounds like my daughter - awake for 7.5 hrs (from 7am to 2:30pm) then a 90-minute nap, then awake for 4.5hrs (from 4pm to 8:30pm, though we start bedtime at 7:30pm and she's in bed no later than 7:45pm).  And that means she's up for 12 hours a day and (theoretcially) sleeps 12 hours a day.  Totally developmentally normal (though on the lower side, still normal) and, honestly, if she's not acting tired, I wouldn't change anything.
