We are definitely wanting to go more for comfort than looks, but there are so many choices. Anyone have any recommendations? Is it really necessary to buy an ottoman as well?
I really liked having the ottoman with the glider. It was nice to have my feet elevated and legs straight once in a while.
I think it's important to have proper head and neck support for you, too. A lot of glider/rocker styles have such a low back that I can't imagine them being comfortable for extended periods of time. I like my glider's high back so I can rest my head and close my eyes while baby is nursing.
Holy crap did I agonize over this. I've been ALL over the internet, and to Babies R Us twice, and target once, here are my conclusions:
Best bang for your buck is the minimalist glider, meaning un-upholstered and you can see the gliding mechanism on the bottom. You can easily get a great glider ottoman combo for under $400. I just bought this Shermag glider ottoman combo --
Be careful though, some of this kind of glider are really uncomfortable. The Delta is awful, for example.
I really wanted an upholstered rocker and to buy a nice piece of furniture, but in a price range similar to the glider above I could only consider Newco gliders and similar brands -- when you see and sit in these at the store it's a major letdown.
I LOVE LOVE LOVED the Attrative American Rocker from Land of Nod, but could not justify the price.
Definitely shop around in person and then check the internet for sales on what you like before you buy. Hope this helps!!
We finally decided on a rocker/recliner instead of a traditional glider. We actually found one on a whim at a great price($299 before coupon) at BBB. It's made by Lullaby, the Rockport. DH wanted the option to recline and while I was initially stuck on the chenille-like upholstered glider/ottoman combo by Newco, the price was just too steep for the quality.
I'm not expecting this chair to last 10 years, but I'm confident it'll get us through the baby/toddler years and it'll have more than paid for itself! Good luck deciding. It's an arduous task!!
After many struggles we are ecstatically and cautiously expecting!

I love the Shermag one you chose! I was actually looking at a similar one tonight at Babies R Us. They are definitely comfortable and more in our price range!
I would find a glider with hidden mechanisms! LO can get their fingers caught in the open style ones. I also recommend an ottoman. I don't have one with DD, and wished then and still wish I did!
With DD we found a great one at Walmart.com and also got it shipped to home for 99 cents. It was like the ones at BRU but much cheaper. It came with the ottoman but I really didnt use the ottoman that much. I also had to remove it as DD got older because she was climbing on the ottoman and it was becoming a hazard.
We ave a Dutailier and love it. The foot portion came with a nursing platform and its great. Don't be afraid to ask about custom ordering your fabric- BRU had a huge book f fabric swatches to pick from. It did, however, take approx two months to come in.
I LOVE the Comfort Swivel Glider from Pottery Barn Kids. I sat in it once and it is so plushy and comfy. The back comes up high enough for your head to rest. BUT..... The price is such a turn off. So now I am in search of one just like it.

We were concerned about this, and for the cats as well, but the Shermag one we picked has a lock so it doesn't glide unless you're in it.
I bought a Best Chairs Hagen from the Storytime Series. It's a swivel glider and I'm planning to get an ottoman to go with it. I'm not a fan of recliners. It's upholstered and I bought it in a color and fabric that I'm comfortable reusing in the rest of my house (they warranty upholstery for 5 years!).
we got ourselves a shermag and it's soooo comfy! We got it off of craigslist for $50 so I'm not sure how much it costs regularly, but it came with an ottoman, has multiple locking functions (it locks when nobody is siting in it, and you can manually lock it into place), AND it has a button to recline the back! If I didn't find it on craigslist for so cheap, I would've bought one just like it at the store for sure.
My sister-in-law recommended this to me...We went to a furniture and bought a large rocker/recliner (think LaZboy) that we can later use in the family room or basement. I STRONGLY suggest this idea, especially if you are planning on nursing. We loved our big comfy chair and spent about 399 on it.
Not that I'm a glider expert, but I spent 20 weeks searching and researching and trying... lol
The conclusion? All the brands you find at stores like Buy Buy Baby and Babies R Us are too flimsy if you're looking for furniture that will last a long time , but the most comfortable of those options would be the Dutailier models (the pricier, the comfier). If you're only looking for something to last you a little while, there really doesn't seem to be much need to pay a whole lot for it. A lot of other furniture stores jack up the prices for something that isn't really much sturdier than the composite wood models... but a few are genuinely worth the cash. We went with the Best brand (yes, the brand is actually Best!) solid wood Bedazzle glider and matching ottoman from a local furniture store. It is super comfortable, incredibly sturdy, and a "real" piece of furniture that we can keep in our living room long after our LO is grown.
So, for the same price as the higher end brands at baby stores we're getting a chair that fits our needs. It should arrive in about 3-4 weeks and I can't wait!!
STM here, I was very happy with the glider we bought for my son, he's 19 months and we still use it every night.
We bought ours at Buy Buy Baby, after going a couple of times and trying a bunch out. Ours looks like a regular upholstered chair--I wanted to be able to eventually use it in other parts of the house in the future. I think trying them out is really your best bet.
Also I agree with the other posters who said to go for the hidden mechanisms--as my son has gotten bigger and squirmier he likes to climb around in the glider, and I could easily see him getting a finger pinched. The less moving parts, the less likelihood of injury!
I don't like ottomans, myself--tried nursing at a friend's house a couple of times and their ottoman was uncomfortable and got in the way--I have a Medela nursing stool, which I love. It's small and unobtrusive and easy to kick out of the way, and just the right height to gently rock in the glider.
