? for those of you who eat healthy

I know I posted a month or so ago about dieting and making a my fitness pal. Well I decided to wait until the New Year so I wouldn't be dieting through the holidays, and H would do it with me. I know... Excuses, excuses. I really want to be serious about it now for not only my health, but the health of my family. We don't really have the extra money for a gym membership/ weight loss plan, but we do have the p90x series.
My questions are mostly about the eating healthy part. I don't know if we should jump all in like completely changing meals or make small changes at a time like cutting back soda intake/ just eating less. I don't feel like we eat unhealthy because I don't fry things, and we maybe eat out a couple times a month. We do eat a lot though.
So I guess my ? are how did you change your eating habits? Do you do small portions of what you like or do you only eat healthy foods? Do you have "cheat days" and how many? Do you follow a certain diet like low carb?
How often do you weigh yourself? How many calories do you eat daily? Bf/ or ff?

I just need to know what helps everyone else suceed!

Re: ? for those of you who eat healthy

  • First, if you have MFP and you want to be friends over there, pm me your username. Having friends on MFP is huge motivation for me.

I breastfeed still. I add the calories into MFP (as food), and it gives me back 300 calories every day. Right now I have it set up to lose half a pound a pound a week, so I start with 1550 calories/day and once I add BFing, I get 1850, which is plenty.

i don't deprive myself. Ever. If you feel deprived, you won't stick with it. I have lost all my weight (I'm now 15 lbs below pp weight) by portion control. I eat ice cream or frozen yogurt just about every night, but I make sure it fits into my daily allotment, and I measure it so I make sure I'm not eating more than I think I am.

In general, healthy eating to me is whole foods plant based. I try to eat vegetarian most of the time, and eat only foods/ingredients that my grandmother would recognize. That doesn't make it all healthy, but it definitely eliminates a lot of crap that I might otherwise eat.

DH is not a big fan of that, though, so we usually eat a lot less "healthy" at nights. We're making small changes with dinner, and moving in a healthier direction. He is also trying to lose weight (so far I think he's lost about 10 lbs).

i guess, in short, my advice is to make small changes and watch portion size like a hawk. If you put everything into MFP for a few weeks, it just becomes habit. I read somewhere that people who track their food at least 5x per week are xx% more successful at losing weight, so that's what I aimed for, and it's worked very well for me.

    good luck!

  • In my experience.... take it step by step.  Make a gradual lifestyle change instead of going on a "diet".  Over the past 4 years, DH and I have changed to all whole wheat, no processed/packaged foods, fresh fruit and veggies, no soda...  We occasionally have cheat days, but after eating heathy for so long, the thought of binging doesn't sound good.  When we do it, we are SO ready to eat healthy again.

I know this is rambly... sorry.  FWIW, my husband LOVES his myfitnesspal.  For him, keeping track of every thing he's eaten has helped him slowly lose a lot of weight - so he'll keep it off.  GL!

  • I weigh myself daily.

I don't drink anything but water and coffee. But I don't like pop, so it isn't hard for me to not drink it. that stuff is loaded with sugar and after a couple of them, the amount of calories really adds up.

I eat breakfast every morning which consists of oatmeal and sometimes fruit. I don't deprive myself of lunch I'm just not hungry for lunch. I snack on fruits through out the day. Dinner is my biggest meal but I stop eating once I'm full. I snack on stuff at night too. Sometimes pies, cereal, cookies... lol.

I BF, but I don't usually add extra calories to my diet because of this.. I eat probably about 1,000 - 1,500 calories a day. I feel fine and my supply hasn't suffered. When I was pregnant I was trying to eat 2,000 calories a day (because I thought I should) and I gained a whole bunch of extra weight when I was trying eat this much.

  • My opinion is different than most.  I say throw out all your processed food, junk food and sodas.  It's like starting the new year with a clean slate.  Plus there's less temptation.  I'm kind of an all or nothing girl.

One thing I learned when I did Weight Watchers is that fruits and vegetables are pretty much freebies, and you can eat as much as you want (if it's cooked healthy and not super carby like potatoes, corn etc.).

I planned out my menu every Sunday for the whole week (we always had turkey burgers Sunday night so that stayed the same).  Planning out my menu for the whole week helped me stay within my points (calories) for the day.  I usually had the same breakfast everyday and had for lunch, leftovers from the night before or I had 2 go to lunches that were easy to make and I knew the points (calories).  I think planning is key and having for dinner protein (chicken, pork, fish etc) the size of a deck of cards and filling up the rest of your plate with veggies.

Since I planned my food for the whole day I would know how many points (calories) I could still use at the end of the day.  The extra calories for me I would apply towards wine after the baby went to sleep, but you could use them for whatever you like.  If I was having a salad for dinner usually that meant I had a lot more points (calories) left at the end of the day so i could splurge for lunch or have an extra glass of wine.

    Good luck!

  • I did WW specifically (lost 70 lbs) but there's a lot of general stuff you can take from it without doing the program.

    1) Do not try to change EVERYTHING about your food and lifestyle at once. It will seem too big and you will throw in the towel much more quickly.

    2) Keep track of what you eat. The simple act of writing down all food you eat will have you losing weight, because SO MUCH of what we eat is mindless noshing. Writing down what you eat creates a decision point, and when you have a decision, you might decide 'no'. It also gives you a good baseline to look at to see where you can make more painless modifications.

    3)  In general, eat more vegetables and fruits. Almost no one gets enough, especially dark green leafy veggies (kale, spinach, mustard greens, bok choi, etc). Aim for AT LEAST 5 servings of fruits and veggies per day (a serving being 1/2 cup of all but leafy veggies, where a serving is 1 cup).

    4) Watch your sodium intake. Almost everyone in the US eats too much.

Some small changes you can make:

When eating out, if you order soda also order a water, and do not allow yourself a refill of soda until you finish a glass of water. Also, cut your food in half immediately and have one half packed up asap for eating another time. Almost all restaurants serve twice an 'actual' serving.

Try to have 1 day a week where your family eats vegetarian.

Get smaller plates. The size of the average dinner plate has almost DOUBLED in this country since the 1950's (go to an antique store and our dinner plates look like their serving platters, I am not kidding). Science has found that it is as much your eyes as your stomach that decides how much you eat.

Do not eat in front of the TV/Computer.

Consider things like cheese and meat to be more 'seasonings' and less main ingredients.

  • Thanks ladies for the great advice! We will probably try the small changes first like cutting out sodas and adding excercise. I know in the past as soon as I considered myself on a diet all I thought about was food, however I really want this to be a lifestyle change.

Kle I think I already accepted your friend request on there, but I'll look next time I log onto the computer since I'm mobile bumping. I haven't logged on in a while though.

  • I second the weighing yourself every day or so. Before, I'd only weigh myself once a week or two, and if, all of a sudden you're 4 or 5 lbs more, it's seems like so much to deal with, enough that you'd have to diet to lose. If you weigh yourself every day, you can catch weight gain before it really becomes a problem. Also, keeping balanced is key for me. If I eat really poorly one day, the next day I'll try to eat less calories. I don't have preplanned cheat days, but eat sweets a lot. So if I overdo it, the next day, I'll try to have egg whites for breakfast, soup fr lunch, quinoa stir fry for dinner, etc. Other than that, the biggest thing we do is eat mosly vegetarian. We started with no meat one day a week, then increased it gradually until now where we eat veggies 6 or 7 nights a week, maybe eating meat once. DH balked at first, but he realized how much better he feels with less meat, and is totally on board now. And it's also way better or the environment :)

Lol, sorry, I'll double check too.

Just wanted to add that I weigh myself daily but only record it weekly. The daily fluctuations keep me honest. If its a bit higher one day, I don't eat as many sweets.

If we are friends feel free to look through my food diary. You might have to go back a couple of weeks, but it would give you a good idea of what I get to eat every day while still losing weight. I need to get back into it. I'll be on more next week, when I'm back to work.
