My son is nearly 7 months and for about the past two weeks, whenever I breastfeed him, he is terribly distracted. He'll drink for the maybe 5-10 seconds, pull off, look around, then repeat that over and over again. He takes bottles at daycare, so I am not sure if he is doing the same distracted behavior or not. I've tried nursing him in quiet dark rooms, not talking to him, talking to him, and same behavior. Also, tonight my husband was with him while I was getting a haircut and he said he tried to feed him a bottle and same thing (distracted and disinterested in eating, but had acted like he was hungry), but then shortly after my DH was eating a snack around my son and DS started crying while looking at him eating, so my hubby fed him some cereal and said he inhaled it. I've also noticed him whining or crying whenever we are eating/having a quick snack, like he wants some too. He has not done any reverse cycling so far so even with this distraction I guess he is still eating enough...
Is this just a phase, or is this the beginning of him being disinterested in BFing? I am worried because I know his primary nutrition should be from breastmilk until 1 and the solids should just be for fun. Any thoughts on what's going on/advice?
Re: Is this the beginning of him weaning?
i don't have a good answer for you, but can symphaize - this is EXACTLY what my LO is doing. bottle or breast - doesn't matter. and he is crazy for solid food. my problem is he is only 5 months! we started rice cereal a few weeks ago and he LOVES it. i'm nervous to give him anything else since he is so young but he is absolutely interested in everything we eat.
he will eat well at night when he is sleepy (ugh).
i was hoping it is just a phase but it has been weeks for us!
i can't imagine he is weaning at only 7months, they need breastmilk or formula through 1 yr... hopefully yours is just a (short)! phase
good luck!
