Newbies and feeling overwelmed

My wife and I have been talking for over two years about starting a family.  We finally decided to stop talking and start trying.  We have a known donor and have been tracking my ovulation for the last few months.  We did the insemination yesterday and today.  We did it at home with the syringe.  Seems pretty basic and easy, right.  Now I am obsessed!  I start reading blogs and looking at forums like this and I am so overwhelmed!!!  I have no idea what people are talking about and I feel like we are so under prepared.

I guess I would like to know that others are in the same boat.  I appreciate and respect people that have been at this for a long time, but its good to know that it could be easy....right?

Re: Newbies and feeling overwelmed

  • Welcome!! Trying to conceive can be such an emotional roller coasterfeel free to share those feelings here if it helps!

Yes, at home with a known donor can work and the journey can be fairly quickit took us 3 times, an I know there are others on the board who have had a similar experience.

    Good luck!!

  • Welcome! Yes, it's easy to find yourself in a place of overwhelm, impatience and obsession. I think ttc is a great time for self-reflection, slowing down, conscious relaxation practices and self-care rituals (journaling, prayer, mediation, yoga, massage, acupuncture, etc). We purposely used the time before and during ttc to focus on ourselves and our relationship. During the process, you can never know if it will be a short or long journey, but you can take the steps you need as they come. Hopefully the resources you're finding will be helpful and not a source of additional stress (if they are, I suggest stepping back from them). There are many great books and other info in our FAQs at the top of the page. Best of luck!

  • Sounds just like my partner and I!  Both of us have wanted kids for years, but I wanted to get a house before we started trying.  It took us about a year to find a known donor that we both liked, and we had our first insemination in November.  Surprisingly, it took, and it's been kind of crazy for the last month or so.  Neither of us expected it to happen so quick, but there ya go.  We spent at least a week not believing it.  It still doesn't feel real, but I don't want to realize I didn't do anything to prepare!  So I have been writing lists of things to get, things to do, etc.  There's a lot to think about, especially since we decided to do a theme for the baby's room and in order to do it I need to figure out how to de-texturize the walls (so far, seems like it will be a BIG job, and something I will have no idea to do).

Welcome, and congrats on getting started!

  • Welcome! I just recently joined the board myself. My wife and I have started to discuss TTC and I at first found myself very overwhelmed and obsessive about the process.  In a few short weeks, I have mellowed out.  As we make some of the very important decisions, I feel like I have more control and that we are narrowing down how we want to go about everything.

A book that I have found very helpful is The Ultimate Guide to Pregnancy for Lesbians: How to Stay Sane and Care for Yourself from Preconception Through Birth.  I have only read up to the section where she begins talking about the actual pregnancy.  For whatever reason, I want to wait for this section until I actually do become pregnant.

When we first started talking about getting ready to TTC, I wanted to start as soon as possible and wanted to use a KD to help save money.  After reading, thinking and having many conversations with my wife (thanks to my obsessive nature), our original plans have changed - and we are both ok with that.  We have two unresolved issues in our lives right now, and though we both keep getting baby fever, we have come to the conclusion that we must see these situations to their resolve before TTC.  Hopefully this will happen by June of the upcoming year.  In the mean time, I am focusing on being healthier, tracking my temp, cycle and ovulation.  I'm also reading up on all of the important issues (important to me anyway) regarding parenting.  We agreed as well to use this time to ready our house for an eventual baby by painting the room that will be the nursery and decluttering.  Hopefully this will help us to have less stress as we begin TTC.

Right now I am at peace with where we are at in our journey, but who knows what the coming months will bring!  You are definitely not alone in this journey!

  • Hey there!!! My wife and I are newbies too! We are doing our first IUI in January end of the month and we are so excited. Our hard part is trying to remind ourselves that it might not be immediate...we are hopefully and anxious!
