I will probably do it later in the game too. I'm sure it will work...no one went to college still needing to be rocked to sleep by mom. (That's what I tell people who say I'm messing up by not letting her cry it out now)
We just went through it this past week - fun Christmas week! It was torture because she wasn't sleeping well at.all! She was a good sleeper up until we went on a trip during Thanksgiving where sleeping just went to hell! Its only been a few days, but so far its been okay (as I hold my breath for even saying anything about it!).

We did it at about 15 months so she would be STTN before her brother got here. It took about 5 nights for her to not cry when we put her down. It can be done... its just not easy.
We did it about a month ago. I think we waited so long because there are two of them and I didn't know where to start. We did whatever we could to get a decent night sleep. Now they both STTN and it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. However I don't regret waiting...
There was a little crying the first few nights, but now they are able to fall asleep on their own and put themselves back to sleep if they wake up during the night. One major thing we did was move to an earlier bed time. They are now in bed at 7pm at the latest. I think by 8pm they were over tired and that was an issue.

I read the book "The no-cry sleep solution" and it said that it's pretty common for a child to not sleep through the night until 2. There are a lot of suggestions in there for getting them to sleep if you want to try something else before CIO.

We did it at 18 months and it was fine. Cried for about 10 minutes the first night, then maybe 2 minutes the second night, then about 30 seconds if at all after that.
We are on day 6 of the Jay Gordon method right now and it's going fabulously. I think it helps that DD has a bit more understanding now so she understands what is happening, even if she doesn't like it.
We did with DD at 16 months after trying everything else. Before this we were up at least 2-3 times a night with her rubbing her back for sometimes over an hour. Then had to tip toe around as the slightest noise would set her off.
Here Is what worked for us:
- DH went in a 5, 10, 15 minute intervals for a few moments, he turned on her music box, gave her the soother and told her it was time to lay down and go to sleep.
The first night she cried hard for just over an hour before falling asleep on her own. The second night she cried not so hard for about half an hour. Third night and pretty much every night since has slept 7pm-7am. I couldn't believe it.
I will probably do it later in the game too. I'm sure it will work...no one went to college still needing to be rocked to sleep by mom. (That's what I tell people who say I'm messing up by not letting her cry it out now)
hahaha omg im going to use this!! my family gives me such a hard time that i lay with her to go to sleep...
We did it with DD at 12 months but she sometimes has problems going to sleep. I let her CIO now. I can tell when she is really upset and I go up and calm her down but other than that she is fine.
Our pedi said that crying never hurt anyone and that it will probably be harder for me that for her. Lol. I'm sure your LO will be fine. GL!

DHs family thinks we spoiling DS by rocking him to sleep at night... it usually only takes max 30 minutes and then he will STTN 90% of the time... I love rocking him and wouldn't give it up unless it was really a problem but 30 minutes to me isn't that big a deal... I think every baby and child will call for their parents if they wake up at night, it just seems like a normal response especially since the dark can be scary to them... there is a ton of pressure out there for babies to be STTN at such a young age that people feel it's necessary to force their child to do it....
you've made it this far OP, and yes it's super tough (I remember being up 5+ Times a night until 15 months and even now he still has rough nights occasionally)... if you feel you absolutely have to do CIO, then do it, but I'm sure your LO will learn to STTN without it and hopefully you'll be happy with your decision to stick it out... Best of luck!

This, if you don't like CIO there are plenty of other ways to try to sleep train a baby but they also may just need something and they can't get up and get it on their own at night. No rule saying LOs have to STTN by a certain age and Im sure sleep training later on won't do any damage to how they sleep later on in life.
good luck!
