Tell me what you love about CDing

I've been doing a lot of research, and I really think that I want to start CDing DD. I SAH, so extra laundry is no big deal for me, but I have to sell DH on the idea. So far, he doesn't seem into it.

So, help me make my case! What do you love about CDing? Any downsides?

Re: Tell me what you love about CDing

  • I love saving money.  We spent about $300 for our stash (and we bought higher end diapers) and will make it up in six months on Emilia alone.

Saving the environment is an added bonus for us, but it's not the reason we do it.

  • No blowouts, ever! And very few leaks. My friends who use sposies are constantly changing outfits. The three or four pee leaks I've had since I stopped using one particular brand have either come after LO STTN or when DH put a diaper on the wrong snap setting.

Edit- and the patterns are SO cute. I have a serious CD addiction.

  • We spent about 400 for 33 BG 4.0 os and they will get us through our two kids we plan to have. The detergent is 15 and it gets us 2.5 months worth of laundry. It isn't difficult. Our water bill hasn't changed. I have to imagine it is much more comfortable for him. It's better for the environment.

Wow, really?  What kind do you use?  We definitely have less blowouts with CD, but they still happen.

Our stash is mostly Swaddlebees OS AIO and BG Freetime/Elemental, with a handful of TotsBots Easy Fit. LO has some monster poops and we have yet to have a poop leak. It's fanfrickintastic!

  • I'd love to CD!! Thanks for starting this thread. I did a little research before Hunter was born, but never followed through. Now that MH is a diaper changing pro I wouldn't mind giving CD a whirl. Do you ladies order them initially from a website? I don't know much about the different styles that I've seen you sometimes discuss. TIA!

  • We love it! Russ is totally on board and we were both pretty stoked to do it. Really the challenges came afterwards but I was the one to handle those (like learning that our water was hard and how to counteract that and just learning little things like how to overnight diaper a 10wk old that soaked through the insert). And while the research on the front end overwhelmed me, there are so many people that know so much and are really willing to offer thoughts and suggestions.

What specifically is your DH not on board for? Or unsure of? Maybe we can speak directly to the realities of that.

We also use BG 4.0s w/ the snaps (for longevity purposes) for everything because even though it is recommended to get a variety, we just wanted the ease of one system to learn and go from there. We will likely add some BG Freetimes to the stash and we are changing out the microfiber inserts that come with the 4.0s for hemp and or cotton. I really wanted ones that would grow with my kid, we just can't afford the ones you have to buy different sizes for.

Basically, he likes the convenience of tossing out a poopy diaper and never dealing with it again. I think he thinks of it as unhygienic, even though it's not obviously. Also, I think he feels it's more complicated, which is why I'd go with something like the BG 4.0s.

  • We use AIO OS. It's amazing. The dipes will last LO up until potty training and through the next kid. One of the biggest perks is not having to ever do late night diaper runs. I have a mix of BG Freetimes/Elementals, Swaddlebees Simplex, and BottomBumpers. I have 28 dipes and laundry every other day or so. I also cloth wipe.
DH was not on board initially but we went to a cloth diaper class at a local cloth diaper store and he was convinced. We went with AIO because they are really just like disposables you don't throw away, which made it super easy for DH who wasn't into learning folding techniques.

They are great. I mean, not *the best* I'm sure... but if you end up loving it and don't mind putting a bit more money into it after you determine you love it and will stick with it, switching out the inserts I think then turns them into like a top option, IMO.

So what we do is have a stainless steel (because it doesn't absorb scent like plastic does) trash can beside the changing table with a planet wise wet bag in it (we have two of these wet bags). As soon as we take a diaper off we pop the lid with our foot, pull out the insert, and toss both in the bag. Two or so days later we dump the bag into the wash and toss the bag in with them and replace the bag for the other one and repeat. No poop touching for a while... until they are on to solids. And then I guess yes, that's a bit ickier of a situation (but why mention that to him now ;)

  • I love CD'ing. We started DS at 2 months old and DH was really skeptical. I basically told him that I'm the one staying home with DS, so I should be able to diaper him the way I want and he agreed. Now DH loves it and he's glad that I pushed it.

We really like the fact that we're saving so much money (spent less than $250 to get started) and the no chemicals. They are adorable as well, and I'm a little crunchy so the the environmental factor is big for me too.

  • We are travelIng and E is in disposables. Huge poopsplosion yesterday that required cleaning up his back and his clothes. That doesn't happen in our CDs.

And seriously they are so cute.

    And no weird chemicals.

We've never had a blowout in the BG 4.0s, but we've had some in disposables. They're adorable. It's easier and way cheaper. and ditto everyone else :)

Kristy- we don't even pull out the inserts anymore!  I do a cold rinse first, then hot wash, cold rinse.  The inserts all agitate out in the first rinse, so no more touching wet/dirty inserts.

Now that I think of it, we've never had a blowout in her pockets, just her AIOs.  But I still prefer AIO because they aren't as big.

OP - I love to hoar out my cloth diaper store:  www.itsybitsybums.com

She's local for me, but she ships across the country.  She has diaper rentals so you can try a variety in advance before purchasing and I'm constantly asking her for advice.  She also sells 'pre-loved' diapers at a discount.  These diapers usually have only been used for a few weeks from other people's rentals and are in great condition.
