Mom's of 2 + with preschool + age kids

What type of carseat are your older kids in (5 point still or in seat belt booster or high back booster, low back booster, etc?)  My 4 1/2 year old has a Britax Frontier in my H's truck and a Britax Marathon in my SUV.  This is all in anticipation of drop off and pick up when he starts kinder in August.

He can buckle and unbuckle himself in the Marathon and Frontier except for unbuckling the crotch clips - those he can buckle but cannot unbuckle.  He is very mature for his age and knows not to unbuckle while driving, etc.  Maturity and his size is not an issue - he is tall for his age, although an average weight.

My question is this - would you buy the Frontier (he will be 5 when we make the purchase) or buy the Parkway?  The drop off and pick up lines at school are what I'm wondering about - how did you have carseats set up when your kids started if you do the car line?  I'm anticipating buckling and unbuckling him in the car line basically.

Most of the kids in DS's preschool class are already in booster mode using only the seat belt (not in 5 point anymore) but I wasn't thinking of moving him to belt only until he starts kinder, but just curious what others did when and why.  Thanks!

  • SD was in a booster when she started kinder.  It was much easier for the drop off line.  She was in a 5 point during pre-k at the same school and it was just too much.  We switched her in the summer before kinder and she has been in one since (almost 8 but on the short/small side)

  • DS is in preschool now at the same daycare where DS #2 goes, but when he starts kinder it will be a different school.  So now I have to park and it isn't an issue, but I'm thinking drop off for kinder might change things.  Thanks for the reply.

  • My 9 year old was in a 5 point harness ( Graco nautilus) from age 4 untill 2nd grade ( spring quarter). She then moved into a basic booster untill age 8.

When she was in preschool I just parked and walked her in and also walked in to pick her up.  At her current school there is a carpool line I can't remember if she was able to unbuckle  it in the morning or if the carpool lady did. I know she was able to do it her self then getting in the seat.

Is there any way you could pull over in the school parking lot to unbuckle before getting in the carpool line if you went with the 5 point?

I would not worry about having the carpool ladies unbuckle if your child can't. It does not take that long.

Im not of a fan of the seatbelts with just a booster at a young age.

This exactly.  The safest is for them to be in a 5 pt harness as long as possible.  Brynn starts kindergarten next year too and she will be a 5 pt until she reaches the weight limit.

  • I would like to keep him in a 5 point until he outgrows it ideally, that's for sure.  At the school he will go for kinder you can't pull over and park - it is a different part of the school than the parking lot (they set it up to be safer for parents/kids in the actual parking lot so there isn't a carpool line to content with).

I think I might just work on him learning how to do the unbuckle part - by then he very well might be able to do it himself.

  • Ds2 is in a belt positioning booster and I'm changing him back. He leans foward and the belt moves to an unsafe position. He listens to me when I say sit back etc. but I can't always stare back at him.

  • Just wanted to add when I had dd's seat inspected they inspected his booster as well and the tech told me the 5 point restraint was much safer. I'll admit the belt positioning booster is much easier for me but I've had reservations about it.
