Help a mama out please, ?s about May due date

Hello. I am a mom of an almost 10 yo DD and an 8 yo DS. They are both very active. I am due with #3 5/8/2013. We live in the south (GA). We pretty much live outside at the pool during the summer. I am curious if anyone can guide my expectations for a may baby and summer activities. Is it too hot to take the baby to the pool?  Or,mas long as there's shade and pool to cool off will we be ok?  Also, been thinking about getting an Uppababy stroller with bassinet feature for taking to the pool. Thought baby could just sleep in there. Do you think I will se that feature or will we really be housebound?  Thanks for any advice/help!

  • It may depend on your baby, but my DD used to get very overwhelmed in the heat.  Short periods of time may be okay, but for the most part we stayed inside w/ windows open to let the air circulate.

  • We had a really hot summer, so I was pretty much stuck indoors because DD hates being too hot. She also hated wearing hats and sunglasses, so that made it tough too.

  • We were out side all summer! I have a 2 year old, a 8 year old and lo. We even camped for a week this summer. As long as there's shade you should be fine, my lo loved to sleep in his stroller. I wish I had know about the wraps, like the moby but woven that you can wear in the water. Then you could wear lo in the water.

If you get lo used to being out and about from the start you should be fine kids are very flexible until you make them creatures of schedule.

Seriously?  Wraps you wear in the water?  So glad I asked. I never would have even thought of this!  It's been a long time and I can't believe how much has changed. Ok, so all this is very helpful!  Keep the advice coming!  Thank you!

I don't know how hot it gets where you live, but that will be a factor maybe. We spent a ton of time outside, but I live in San Diego and it doesn't get super hot. When it was hot, baby wore just a diaper.  She napped in the carseat in the stroller, and had pretty good shade coverage that way. We just kept her out of the sun, and she was in the pool with us at 2 months old (pedi ok-ed).

Great advice. It gets very hot here 90+ and humid. So, that is a factor. I was hoping for quiet mornings at home and afternoons at the pool to cool off.  I'll make sure we have lots of onesies. Thanks!

  • Yeah the water wraps looked cool Not sure of the name try asking in the attachment parenting board about them. The mom I saw with one loved it!

  • My LO loves to be hot...here in Pittsburgh it generally doesn't get super hot, but we do see some high temps here and there. We went to the pool several times- and with just him, I just carried him in the water, but with multiple kids I would definitely advise a water carrier. He also wasn't a huge fan of the pool at that time, so I bought a raft for him and would float him on it, which he liked. We also went to the beach when we went to NC, which was hot- he thought that was fun and ended up napping on the towel for a little while. Make sure there's shade, and use sunblock if you can.  Some pedis still say no sunblock/sunscreen before 6 months, but those recommendations are starting to change. We used Episencial sunblock on LO when we were outside for any length of time.
  • These are all great tips. I might just get some sort of portable sleeper instead of spending so much on the stroller. I will continue to think it over. This is all great info and I appreciate your thoughts!

  • My apt complex has a pool and I was out there alot during the summer. Mostly lo would sleep. I would dress him very lightly and park him in the shade. The sun was my biggest concern. To nurse him, I would go to the locker rooms bc it wasnt as warm and i could wash the chlorine off as well. I took walks all summer too.

  • My graco stylus travel system has a feature that isn't shown on its web site. There is a part that folds up at the bottom turning it into a bassinet for babies to sleep in. Not sure how describe it and I can't find a pic online but I love this stroller especially for this feature.

  • My kids didn't mind the heat but I tried to keep them as unincumbered as I could.  They did enjoy laying on a blanket in the shade, when they were all strapped into something outside they would get pretty mad, but we had an insanely hot summer here too.

I live in North Florida (so similar climate), and we were able to do some outdoor stuff in May/early June but not hours on end. Once July and August got into full swing with relentless heat, we didn't do too much outdoors. DD would become a sweaty, grouchy beast just being in her carseat and going to the store, so we didn't hang outside too much then.

  • I think you'll only be housebound if you want to be. I'm sure you remember how it is from your previous newborn experiences. We went out plenty last summer and it was just fine. I also know people who have different beliefs about keeping a baby indoors who didn't go out so much. Whatever you want will be fine!

Thank you. This is great advice!  I will remember this. This baby was a miraculous much wanted but not planned gift. We've had many fertility trials and had finally decided to stop and bam. Anyway, this is not the timing I would have planned if this was planned, so it's making me nervous.  But, I will just keep reminding myself to go with the flow and I'm sure as long as I'm calm, the kids will (hopefully) follow suit. I do remember being at the pool with dd over the summer, but she was a February baby, so a little older by time it was super hot.

Thanks, again, everybody for taking time to respond.

  • We had a very hot summer with many code red days, so I didn't feel comfortable keeping the baby outside for very long. I did take her swimming in the evenings when the sun started to set. Sometimes MIL would hold her sitting out of the pool and sometimes I'd take her in the pool with me, until she got fussy.
