Have you washed baby's clothes, etc.?

Hi all,

Just wondering if I am weird for already washing baby's clothes. I have a 22 mo. old and I figured I better get some things done before I go back to work and have ZERO energy left towards the end of the 3rd tri. I also am considering setting up the pack 'n play within a few weeks and getting other little things ready.  When are you planning on doing these things?

Re: Have you washed baby's clothes, etc.?

  • I don't have many outfits right now for my baby so I am planning on washing clothes after my shower.  I got her furniture yesterday and I washed all her bedding and extra sheets since I had the day off and wanted to be productive.

  • I'm waiting until February to wash all his clothes and bedding.  That way they stay fresh and don't get dusty.

  • I haven't yet.  I've thought about it but I think I'll wait til later - Jan/Feb - so that way everything stays fresh and doesn't somehow get dusty or dirty, especially since we have a cat.

  • Nope, probably not until Feb. I don't want sheets to get dusty as someone above mentioned, and will only wash newborn and a few 0-3 month sized pjs/outfits. I also need to wash the newborn cloth diapers I have as they are supposed to go through the wash a few times before being used the first time.

  • I'm holding off until we have a dresser to put things in.  In the meanwhile, clothes are hanging in my closet and diapers are in a hamper waiting to go into the laundry when we're ready.
  • I've washed/folded some of baby's clothes. I'm sure as the nesting gets really bad I may wash them again. I washed them a few weeks ago and they still smell fresh, for now. It's hard to resist the urge to do wash/get things ready. I'm there with you :o)

  • I was wondering when I should start.  I am worried that I will get induced early and nothing will be ready but I don't want the sheets to get dusty.  I am buying baby soap today.

  • Ditto to what everyone said about washing clothes so they are fresh... I did wash a set of sheets when I set up the crib but those will be rewashed later. I would set up the pack n play if you have plenty of room. My mom bought one for her house and the smell was kind of strong. She has it set up in a spare room "airing" out...smells much better now :)
  • Waiting til closer to my due date for a better size guess on the baby.

  • This post is very funny to me because I just sat down to take a break from taking all the tags off the clothes before I start washing them this afternoon! lol I already had my shower, and have the dresser and closet ready, so I will get everything ready now. That way, if the baby decides to come early, I'll be ready. If not, I'll have time to wash them again later if they become dusty, but as they will be stored in the dresser, and since I don't have any pets and do clean regularly, I can't imagine that they would get that dirty from here to March. Time will tell! But in the meantime, it gives me a sense of control during my pregnancy, which, let's face it, is sort of the end to any control we have had on our lives for at least the next 20 years or so. Enjoy the moments, and do what feels right for you.

  • I went through all of DD's clothes and kept what would work for baby boy and put the rest in bags to be donated. I also inherited a ton of baby boy clothes from a friend and I washed and folded everything and separated them according to size. The newborn and 0-3 month clothes are already in his dresser and the bigger sizes are put into boxes for later. I have been nesting like crazy lately and all I want to do is organize and get ready for his arrival. I am actually looking at storage bins and bookcases online right now because I want to rearrange the living room and DD's room to make space for my glider and baby boy's things.

  • The used stuff I've gotten from others, I've washed once and will probably do again in late January/February when I wash other stuff

  • Speaking of washing the baby's clothes and bedding.  Do you ladies use special baby detergent?  Sorry FTM and wondering if it is necessary.  I also heard you could just use detergent that was free and clear.

  • I get itchy with detergent that has lots of perfume in it so we already use free and clear which is what we'll wash baby's clothes in as well.  I did buy some Charlie's Soap for cloth diaper loads but otherwise everything else will be in with the general wash.
  • I haven't washed the new clothes, but I have washed all the clothes that were donated to us (handmedowns, ect). I am prob excpetion as I am a big planner and like to get things done.
  • I'm waiting for after my shower in feb to start washing everything.

  • I've washed just about everything we've gotten and put it in the dresser.  I figure there will be enough for me to do closer to the due date, and I'll be happy to have all the clothes washed.  Don't know about freshness of things, since I use a fragrance free baby detergent, but I do know that at least all the dyes and starches will be out of her clothes.

  • I will wait until February to wash LO's clothes. While I do use Free and Clear detergent, there is a difference in the smell of clothes that has been recently washed vs. clothes that was washed three months ago and has been sitting in a drawer. I personally hate that drawer smell.
