Can someone explain Instagram?

I got a new iPod touch I know, antiapple here....but I guess I changed my mind and there's an app called Instagram and I don get it. Is it just an online photo album? I see people upload photos to Facebook "via Instagram" and I have no idea what it means...

    You can edit pictures you take to look like polaroid or old-timey photos or hi-def type stuff. And then you can post it and share. I hardly use it. Much easier just to post directly to FB.

    It's like twitter but just for pictures. You can put filters on your pics and show everyone what you ate for dinner. Or, if you're me, you post nothing but your baby and your cats and occasionally cool ducks and bugs that you see.

    This is what I do. haha. lots of pictures of DD. haha. I'm not addicted, but I do love it at times

    This. I love IG.

    I think it would be harder to get into with an ipod. The iphone has a pretty good camera, and I always have my phone with me.
