Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Lovey and nightime sleeping

During the day, when DS goes down for a nap he loves to have his blue elephant lovey with him. He rubs it on his face, sucks on the satin corners and wraps it under his arm and falls asleep. If he wakes, he self soothes himself with it and goes back to sleep. It is a perfect situation!

Now come nighttime. When he initially goes down he just goes down, no prompting or lovey needed. But, when he wakes at 2ish in the morning, We do our typical MOTN routine which includes a bottle (the kid is starving) and sometimes he just isn't drowsy from the bottle. So I will give him his lovey, he goes through the same motions and falls asleep. Once he is asleep (yes I'm still awake standing cribside) I slowly peel it out of his grips then go back to bed myself.

So here is my dilemma...he sleeps so much better when he has it, but I know he shouldn't have anything in the crib with him when he sleeps. As it is he rolls all the way over to the breathable crib bumper and attemps to suck on the satin bonding that runs around the top to sooth himself back to sleep. So, now that we are over the 6month mark, he moves around and rolls like crazy, and SIDS is reduced now.....would it be okay to put him to bed with his lovey (roughly 12"x12" in size)? Or should I maybe make a smaller one for him to take to bed with him (maybe 4"x4")? I just want him to get a good nights sleep and learn to self soothe himself back to sleep and these loveys do it everytime.

Re: Lovey and nightime sleeping

  • mine has a little lovey that he sleeps with (a tiger head with soft and silky body. Just do what makes you comfortable but if you do it for naps, i don't see why you wouldn't do it for the 2nd half of the night

At my sons 9 month appointment the doctor said NOTHING in the crib until at least 12 months because it's still dangerous. During naps I put a small blanket in with him because he loves it and wanted to do it at night but the doc said no and I listen to her suggestions. Luckily my LO sleeps fine at night without anything. Just my 2 cents :)

My Pediatrician okayed the lovey, as long as it wasn't heavy and baby was capable of moving it off her face.

  • I know the pedi says no but I have done it.

  • Yea, it is pretty lightweight. Satin backed with a super soft plushy fabric front, and a little elephant head in the middle. He is more than capable of moving it off his face. I know he shouldn't have anything until 1year, and I don't want to play the "we turned out ok" card, I just wondered what other moms were doing for their LO's who like their loveys to sleep with too. Thanks ladies...I appreciate it.

  • I think we have the same lovely! But ours is a rabbit.  I'm actually planning to buy a couple to keep in the closet, because ours is already starting to look a little worn from all the washing.  I"d also like to send one to daycare.

  • I'm not typically a rule breaker, but when we sleep trained at five months I started letting him sleep with a lovey very similar to yours during naps along with a folded receiving blanket under him. Once he was doing well with that I started doing the same for nighttime. He moves around a lot in his sleep and is more than capable of moving away from anything infringing on his space or interfering with his breathing.

He now sleeps with his fave crocheted blanket and his lovey during naps, but just the receiving blanket and lovey at night. Also, I never discussed it with my ped, but he stopped mentioning anything about having things in the crib at his five month appt. prior to that he ALWAYS mentioned to never put anything in there.
