Pregnant after a Loss

Talk to me about Zofran

Since 6 weeks or so, I have had extreme nausea just about every day starting around 2pm and going up till I go to bed.  I have tried all the typical suggestions (small frequent meals, etc) and nothing seems to help.

Around 10 weeks, I started throwing up and have continued to do so every day since, at least once.  This past week, I've thrown up several times a day and have started to get sick earlier, and earlier each day.

I thought I would start feeing better instead of worse? I'm to the point where I can't cook anything any more.  At what point should I consider asking about Zofran?  I feel like I should just suck it up b/c it could be so much worse.  I'm the type of person who hates taking any type of medication at all, but I feel like I'm losing my mind.  WWYD?

Re: Talk to me about Zofran

  • I started to get sick at 6 weeks then started to feel better around 10 weeks and then the nausea came back with a vengeance around 12 weeks and I was vomiting every day until about 14 weeks. I took Zofran every morning, and occasionally in the afternoon. It certainly did give me headaches but I'd have traded a multitude of headaches for 1 session of violent vomiting any day.

It doesn't work as well, if at all, when you are dehydrated so it may take a few doses before you really start to feel better but I believe it is important to stay hydrated in comparison to the "possible" sideffects from Zofran.

I took it almost every day for over a month and my baby boys are doing just fine. I was also able to feel only like half death instead of complete death. Come 16 weeks my nausea has completely disappeared (aside from one episode of vomiting the day after my flu shot) and I don't take/need Zofran at all.

I think if you're vomiting every day, sometimes multiple times, there is no shame in taking something to help.

  • Zofran is amazing. I was feeling queasy starting around 6 weeks. Starting at 7 weeks, I was waking up at 2am and would vomit for hours. I missed 4 days of work bc of it, too. I really couldn't function. My mom and my sisters had morning sickness during their entire pregnancies.

Zofran allows me to function and allows me to keep my thyroid medicines down!

Its not a complete cure. I still barely want to eat and nothing sounds good. I was sick most of yesterday. Haven't thrown up today. But have felt like I am going to alllll day!!

  • If I were you, I would get a script for it. I took it daily from 6 weeks until 11 weeks. It never completely got rid of the nausea, but it took the edge off and kept me from throwing up. The main side effect I had from it was constipation, but I would take a stool softener to stay somewhat regular.

  • If you're getting sick that much, I'd take the zofran. I'd be more concerned about getting dehydrated from vomiting than the side effects of the zofran (one of which is constipation, so you may want to take stool softeners if you can tolerate them too).

Congrats to both my TTC buddies, Amberley18 and sb2006 on their beautiful babies!
  • The quick dissolving tabs are a gift from God. I asked for them as soon as my nausea kicked in around 6 weeks... I figured why suffer?

I've had the regular pills you swallow during my last pregnancies, but they didn't work nearly as well, and I would have to take them, then lay in bed until they took effect.

He's my fairytale, a dream when I'm not sleeping.

  • Ugh - sounds miserable! I would call your OB's office and talk to them about calling in a prescription for you asap. With DD's pregnancy, I waited it out thinking the m/s would get better, and finally when I weighed in and found I was losing weight, I took Zofran. It changed my life!  I could function, work, and even eat without any hesitation. I was afraid to take anything with this pregnancy because of the loss, but was reassured by these lovely ladies to go ahead and I haven't looked back since.  Again, it's saved my sanity and saved me from having to use a lot of sick leave from work. Whatever decision you make, I hope you feel better soon!!

  • I would definitely be taking something at that point.  Zofran was a joke for me, it made me constipated and barely did anything to help with nausea.  I tried a couple other things.  The only one I had success with was 1 unisom tablet every night.  Even at 37 weeks pregnant I throw up daily if I skip a dose.

  • Thanks, ladies!  I have my NT scan tomorrow and it's right across the hall from my OB's office.  I think I might stop in and see if I can get a script.  Thanks again!
  • I just started taking it two hours ago. I've been nauseous for about two weeks about half the day but hadnt thrown up and some of the home remedies were at least making it bearable. But for some reason today I have been throwing up uncontrollably since 10am (it started on my drive home from work while stuck at a traffic light, horrible, all I had was a flimsy paper bag that didn't hold and it ended up ALL over me). Anyway, I haven't kept down even a sip of water. I thought I could tough it out but finally had my doctor call me in something. And even though I only made it one day of feeling like hell before crying uncle Im really not usually one to take any meds. But I think if you're to a point where you can't function properly and are miserable you should give it a try. I think it's far more important to be able to eat and keep fluids down.

So far it's worked wonders. I've still got a brutal headache (I'm assuming from being dehydrated) but I've had two glasses of water and a handful of crackers and actually kept it down for about an hour which is simply miraculous!

Good luck! I hope you get some relief!

  • Someone else mentioned constipation, too. The first couple days on zofran, I was still almost afraid to eat or drink bc I had been so sick for a few days. Drinking enough fluids was tough. Now I have found it really hard to drink fluids in the morning, but make sure to drink tons of water all afternoon and evening. I also take one colace for every zofran. And started adding Metamucil to juice or hot cereal. And eating two apples a day. This helped relieve my constipation and hopefully will help keep me regular!

  • This is going to sound silly, but have you tried preggie pops? They are candies that you suck on when you feel nauseous. I tried my hardest to stay medication free this pregnancy, even though my nausea & vomiting was BRUTAL between 6-10 weeks (I've lost about 20-25lbs this pregnancy because of that). I started sucking on those preggie pops, and they seriously changed my life.

But, zofran. Go for the dissolving ones if you're having trouble keeping things down. I've used it for other bouts of nausea & vomiting and it works great. Definitely drink lots of water once you can, and use a stool softener though!
