Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Peeing Through Diaper

My DS is 6 months - he sleeps (most of the time) through the night and he is a stomach sleeper.

We change his diaper RIGHT before he goes to bed and he wakes up around 5 am every morning and has peed so much that he's flooded his sheets.  Now, we point "the bird" down, so I don't know what is going on!

His diapers are the right size and we buy name brand diapers.  I don't know what to do, because I am not trying to set an alarm to wake up and change his diaper to avoid this.

Does anyone else have this problem with their sons?  It's just started happening now that he's started sleeping on his stomach. (and he will not sleep on his back or his side, he rolls alone so that is how he is comfortable)

Re: Peeing Through Diaper

  • DD has this issue from time to time, like you said we change her right before bedtime and she wakes up soaked through.

I bought some overnight diapers and 95% of the time, she wakes up with a soaked diaper, but her clothes and sheets are dry.

  • DS is not quite 6 months but I was lurking and trying to pass the time at work Big Smile We are having the same problem even down to the sleeping on the stomach. Yesterday when I picked him up he was so wet he got my shirt soaked. What was recommended to me was to just use the next size up to see if that helps. I had been using the Pamers night time in size 2 so I am going to try the size 3. Hopefully this will help. GL!

  • Huggies Overnights are the only thing that has ever kept my son dry overnight.  Try different brands until you find something that works :)

  • DS went through a heavy wetter stage at that age, too. It did end up evening out a bit as he got a little bit older. We use cloth but we spend the night at my parent's house often and use disposables when we are there. For us, going to the next size up overnight diaper didn't work and switching brands didn't work. What actually ended up working is not putting a onesie on him and using fleece pajamas. Fleece is made of polyester and doesn't absorb liquid so if you put fleece against the diaper it won't wick the moisture like a onesie does. When we did this he stopped waking up soaked.

If you don't want to use fleece pajamas you can also buy something called a fleece soaker which is technically a cloth diaper cover but could go over a disposable diaper too and act as a barrier between the diaper and the pajamas. I think you can find them on Etsy for like ten bucks or make your own if you sew...google Katrina's fleece soaker pattern for a free printable pattern that is good. You don't have to wash them any special way, just wash them once with fabric softener (fabric softener makes fleece repel moisture) and then you can wash them with your normal laundry. With the soaker your LO could wear cotton pajamas over it.

If that doesn't work I think they sell disposable diaper doublers or I have heard of people putting maxi pads in their kids diapers to add extra absorbency.

    (sorry so long)

  • We use generic diapers during the day and Huggies Overnight at night.  She wakes up with a really full diaper, but very rarely does it leak.
