Anyone ever use care.com?

DH and I have no family nearby and after my post last week about our daycare provider dropping the ball and not watching the kids next Monday, DH and I talked and decided that we should look into finding back up (and also someone we can  use as a sitter so we can get out more).

Anyone find a good sitter through that website or a similar website? And, how did you decide on what sitter to use?

Re: Anyone ever use care.com?

  • we found our nanny through care.com, she's great! We found a few through the website and interviewed them all in person.

I will say that the primary reason we felt comfortable using a website is that either myself or DH are working from home on the days she watches DD. Now of course we are totally comfortable letting her watch DD while we run errands or whatever.

I did think some of the profile pictures posted of the sitters were kind of ridiculous and we weeded them out based on that alone. One person used a phone picture of herself making a 'duck face' in a dressing room trying on a prom dress. She might've been a sweet girl, but I just couldn't get past that ridiculous picture.

  • Yes!  I also had reservations like you but I felt that this was a huge step up from craigslist and other such search engines.  Luckily DH's company gave all employees membership so decided to give it a go.  We have family nearby but there are times when we need a sitter and it might be inconvenient to ask family/friends.  We looked at everything from age, experience, profile picture, length of profile, and certifications.  Surprisingly, some people were not CPR or first-aid certified and I feel that's a must when watching children.  We also looked at references, did a quick email exchange with the person we selected, and then a home visit.  Once we saw how well she interacted with the kids and got to see her personality we knew she would be perfect.  Of course, despite all that I still hid my laptop and kept our bedroom doors closed!  So far I am happy with using this site though.  She's babysat for us twice and both times it's gone really well.

  • Yes, we found a great lady!  I looked through a ton of profiles and posted a job.  We selected 6 to interview. 1 needed to reschedule, 1 no showed and so we actually interviewed 4.  None of them were terrible, but one stood out.
