how to teach LO to sleep on their own?

So, my SIL just said my LO might be waking up at night because she doesn't know how to put herself back to sleep.  She eats, so I thought she was hungry-- but she also doesn't sleep for the nice 6-hour stretches she used to.

How do we teach her to fall asleep on her own (sans nursing) without making her cry it out?

Thanks!

  • Our pedi told us to put lo in his crib awake. He said to let lo fuss to sleep in the beginning of the night and he will have less trouble sleeping through the night. It has worked really well for us. Now he only wakes if he is teething or sick. It does involve some cio in the beginning. We have been doing this for a month now, and most nights he doesn't fuss.

  • I'm going through the same situation. Glad to know I'm not alone. Nice to see all the recommendations. DD is so used to being nursed to sleep, after the holidays we're going to start letting her cio when we put her down for bed. We can't do it with the ILs in town, I don't want to ruin their trip. For two nights this past week we let her cio at the beginning and she slept so good those nights so I know it will work. Hang in there, we can do this together!

  • Thanks, ladies.  I'm okay with letting her fuss for a while, so I'll definitely give it a try once we're back home.

Thanks so much for the suggestions! :-)

  • Curious to know how long your los cio for? Bc i need to start doing this.

  • Just be aware CIO doesn't work with all kids. My middle would just keep crying I mean screaming all night if we tried CIO to the point where he was gasping for air. Also my cousins son will make himself puke if you let him CIO.

  • I also let him fuss a bit. He isn't sleeping through the night by any stretch of the imagination, but it's helping with naps at least. I'll put him in the crib. He fusses. When I see the big lip I pick him up, and calm him down. Then I set him back in the crib and shush and pat him. After about 3 rounds of this he goes to sleep and naps much longer than when he nurses to nap.
