Babies: 6 - 9 Months

gagging on solids

DS is 6 1/2 months old and still refuses solids. If I can get him to open his mouth, he gags on whatever I give him. We've tried oatmeal, rice cereal, bananas, avocados, sweet potatoes and white potatoes. I've tried each for several days and he is just not interested. He's EBF, so I know food is just for "fun" for now, but I am starting to get worried that he's got some sort of swallowing problem.

Any advice?

Re: gagging on solids

  • Mention it to your pedi, but I wouldn't worry about it. He might just not be ready yet.

ita...gagging is also normal for finger foods not sure about pur?es.

  • My 6 month old is refusing all foods as well so I've been doing a little google research and it seems that it is fairly common... apparently, some babies don't really want solid foods for a while and even if they don't eat solids until 1 year old that can still be normal (although the pedi might disagree so I would discuss with your doctor).  However, my initial reason for responding is that I read that gagging is a way to tell you that he doesn't want the food / isn't ready for it.  The poster made the comment that they really don't have any other way to tell you that they don't want it.  Hope that helps you!

  • DS refused all solids until he was 7.5 months old. If we got any in that he couldn't spit out he'd gag. We just tried once or twice a week until he finally started accepting them. I wouldn't worry about it yet.

  • I had the same problem with my youngest. I just kept trying and he is doing better. I tried different consistencies and temps. Turns out he will only eat it warm. I also kept trying things until I found something he didn't totally hate - bananas, apples and pears he will tolerate. Also, make sure you are not trying to feed LO when he/she is tired, hungry or full. I normally feed him in the middle of his scheduled bottle feedings.
