Babies: 9 - 12 Months

How many still EBF?

NOTHING against formula feeders... just curious how many are still EBF? If you are, how is it going for you?  How is your supply? Is baby gaining well?

My son just lost 1/2 pound, but the dr. didn't seem to care... I didn't think babies were ever supposed to lose weight.

Re: How many still EBF?

  • I EBF until 9 months (plus solids obviously), and am still breast-feeding now. He might get 2 or 3 formula bottles a week so I guess he's like 90% bf. I do think bf babies gain quicker than formula babies in the first 6 months, but then gain slower in the 2nd 6 months of their first year.

I don't think weight loss is normal, but your dr would know your baby, where he is on the growth chart, etc. If he has been sick or starting to get really active by crawling or walking he might slow down on the gain? Did your dr have an explanation as to why he wasn't concerned?

DS has not gained weight well, but he's kept to his curve (at about 17 percentile). He is crazy active though, he probably burns a lot of calories. I am always worried about it and try to feed him high fat foods like avocado, cheese, etc. I also give him a multivitamin because his iron levels were low (dr.'s recommendation).

  • I still do. My supply is OK. I've struggled off and on and needed to use More Milk supplements and hospital-grade pump for months but so far we've avoided formula. DS is gaining just fine though it will be interesting to see how things go at next week's 9 month appointment. DS is in month-long bottle strike at daycare and is taking about half of the BM at daycare that he was before Thanksgiving. Frustrating because he nurses all night long to make up for it.

  • I'm still EBF plus solids obviously.

I will for a few more weeks until I go back to work when LO is 12months. Then she'll be on cows milk during the day, and I'll still nurse when we're together.

I didn't think babies were meant to lose weight either, but if your Dr is o with it....then I wouldn't worry unless you think he's sickly in some way.

  • DD is still EBF and will be 12mo on Jan 4th.  My supply seems to be fine & DD is still gaining weight.  She's always been small, I think she's close to 18lbs now.  If your ped isn't concerned with LO's weight I would try not to worry.

  • I still am and I assume my supply is fine for what she needs at least. I basically can't pump anything but when I nurse she is totally satisfied. Once she turns 1 in a month I'm going to stop nursing her two day feedings andgl give her the rest of my frozen stash in a sippy and when that is gone in a couple weeks ill just switch her to wcm. But I still plan to keep nursing her in the am when she wakrs up and before bed at night til were both done... or til I get pregnant again lol

  • Im still bf. She's 10 months and gets solids and a tiny bit of wcm in a sippy. My supply has went down but I think  that has more to do with her being sick for 10 days and just not eating well.

  • I'm still bf'ing, [plus solids]. My supply is fine. I've had some dips along the way, but eating lots of oatmeal always helped.

Babies really shouldn't lose weight. It's normal for their weight gain to slow as they become more mobile, and burn more calories. But they shouldn't lose weight.

I would try to add a feeding or two. Maybe you could do a dream feed before you go to bed, for example. And/or give LO foods with more fat, like avocado, chicken thighs, and cook with olive or canola oil.

  • I'm still EBF(but with solids also). My daughter is 10 1/2 months. I don't plant to stop anytime soon. :-)
  • EBF plus solids here...my DS is 9m.  My supply is fine as far as I know.  I plan to start weaning him around 12m by switching to whole milk.
    DS1 born 3/27/12 DS2 due 1/8/14
  • Me too! DD just turned 11 months.  We're going strong.  She eats a lot of solids and BFs plenty.  I work all day and she hardly has milk during the day though, but it's no big deal because she BF in the morning plenty and still wakes once (sometimes to eat).  She also nurses to sleep every night so I know she's still getting plenty of milk.

My supply has dropped but honestly it's not too bad.  I pump once a day at work and get from 5-6 oz.  I have over 100 oz in the freezer and I think I might donate again because I don't think i'll be using it with her.

I also don't plan to wean any time soon.

  • I'm still EBF. My son has been in and out of the doctor's office for various infections. At his 9mo checkup, he had technically lost about a half pound from the week before, but the week before, he was weighed with his clothes on, and the well check was diaper only. He also had a pretty decent BM right before they left for the appointment. The doctor was not concerned because his growth from his 6mo check was right on track with his previous gains. Grown ups' weight can vary several pounds throughout the day, so I imagine that LO's weight can also vary a few ounces throughout the day.

  • EBF plus solids here as well. Supply is good. Always have had an over supply and he doesn't take a bottle well at all so I have quite the freezer stash. We will keep going until he stops or until I get pregnant and dry up. He has never been one to pack on the pounds but so far has not lost any weight.

  • I don't exactly EBF - only bf when I am home from work and even his night bottle I pump so I can give him extra. But pump all day at work so no formula bottles here. My son was born a month early so with that said the doctor is happy with his weight. He is 10 months next week and when I went to the doctor Christmas Eve he weighed 18 pounds 12 ounces.  Supply is not as good as it use to be. Sometimes I only get 3 oz when I pump other times 4 oz. If I don't get my breakfast in I swear it effects my supply just as well as not drinking enough or not pumping on time.  I will be stopping in the next two weeks so I can start treatments again to try for baby #2 :)

  • Cordelia is still EBF, with solids.  Things are going great besides the occasional bite here and there :(  Cordelia is gaining well I assume...her last appointment was at 6 months and won't go back until early Feb.  My supply is good, goes down around my period though which makes her mad!

  • Still EBF here with solids. It's going well, and my supply is good. My DS is gaining well. He's slowed down in the weight gain, which I think is pretty typical. He is 9 months.

  • I'm still EBF with solids. Supply is starting to dwindle, only evident that I'm not pumping as much in the morning. I used to pump enough for 2 bottles, and built of enough of a freezer stash to stop pumping at work just after 6 months. A couple months ago I started getting just enough for one bottle, but the past week, I've only gotten 3oz, which is not quite enough for her afternoon bottle. Sad I'm still pullng from the freezer stash for her morning bottle (at daycare) and nursing when she wakes up and nursing to sleep. Just this morning (for the first time) I added an ounce of WCM to what I pumped to make it a full bottle. She's almost 10 months, so I think I'm going to quit that morning pump (Yay for an extra half hour of sleep!) and my freezer stash should get me through the next 6-8 weeks, then we'll fully transition to WCM.

  • I'm still EBF'ing.  I struggle with supply issues moreso around AF.  I've been taking More Milk Plus but it only seems to help a little.  I've mainly had to dip into my freezer stash when I come up short at the pump.

DS has always been a big boy and continues to gain weight with his growth percentages in the 75% range.  He eats solids really well though.

I plan to continue nursing and pumping at work until he's 1 year old then will transition him to cow's milk during the day and nursing at night and in the morning until he's ready to wean himself.

  • We're still EBFing with 2 meals of solids a day. I recently tried to push it up to 3 meals of solids a day, and he really cut back on the nursing during the day. As a result he started to get dehydrated and didn't have enough wet diapers, so now we are back to only lunch and dinner with the solids. My supply seems fine but it's always going up and down- I never really know if I'm going to have a full or empty day. lt also seems like my let downs take a little longer than they used to which seems to frustrate LO sometimes. I'm hoping I can soon add in more solids without him going on a nursing strike.

  • Still EBF ~5-6 times a day plus three solid meals.  After her first bday I don't know what I'll do,  I can't pump at work anymore, but she is still nursing so much when I'm home and I don't really want to cut her off.  We will see.  I do need to ween her if we are going to try for #2 since we will be doing fertility treatments.  Tough choices...
