Child locks

Hello.

Well, we live in a condo on the ground floor. My son 2 years has recently started to climb out of his crib and wonders around. We have a front door which is inside of the building and another main door that leads to our patio that is also along a busy main road. We lock both locks on the doors every night just to be sure. He knows how to unlock the ones on the handle he's tall enough but can't reach the main locks yet.. Any suggestions of what kind of locks we could put up high so he won't be able to reach them??

Re: Child locks

  • Do you want to make sure he stays in or just know the second he goes out?  We have a doorknob cover on our handle but we also have an alarm up high so that day when she figures out the cover, we will know the instant she opens the door.

  • Do you have a screen door?  We put loop and hook on our storm/screen doors high up.  We also put jingle bells on the top part so it acts like another alarm system.  Another thing to think about is a gate on his door so he stays in if he gets up.
  • We have child locks on some of our doors already. They are lever door handles and for some reason they dot work very well, he can still open them most of the time. The alarm is a bit iffy because he could still have a chance of just runny after it sounded. Maybe one of those slide locks not sure what they are called but the ones that are in hotels lol.. We couldn't use that for the door of the patio though. Hmm

  • If it's a sliding door on your patio try a tension rod, works well for my slider, if it's not a slider they make these dooe locks that like almost fold over and they are up high like where a chain lock would be.

I'm sure you can find one at a hardware store.  The old fashioned chain one would work.

We had lever door handles on all our downstairs doors.  Those locks don't work at all, we ended up just buying a bunch of cheapy knob ones at lowes and switching them out.  I'm not sure if I'll put the levers back on when he gets older, I kinda like the knobs better.

  • i have a houdini 2 year old too!  he's figured out the baby gates at this point and we have the round door knob safety cover on our front door, because he can and will run outside on his own.  very scary.

what about a simple eye hook and latch (like the ones you'd find on a crappy bathroom stall) installed high up on the doorframe?
