Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Anyone else dreading christmas?

DS isn't sleeping well at all lately (due to acombination of teething, head cold and now just plain bad nighttime habits). Which makes him (and me, and dh) super cranky and tired all day.

This in turn leads to ds not tolerating crowds well because he's so easily overstimulated -plus he's a light sleeper and won't nap around noise. We're heading to 2 dinners tomorrow. I figure it'll be ok at my family's because most of them aren't baby people and they'll leave ds alone. But when we head to ILs everyone is going to be all up in DS's business wanting to hold him and play with him and I know he's just going to cry like 85% of the time we're there. Can't wait for the holidays to be over :( which makes me sad because Christmas is usually my fav time of year.

Re: Anyone else dreading christmas?

  • I am sort of anxious about how DS is going to handle things today. We're going to Mass at 4 this afternoon, then over to my parents' for a quick visit with my family, then over to my in-laws' for a party and a visit from Santa. I am sure by the time we are done DS will be cranky and exhausted. He hasn't slept well the last three nights so yea for me. Then tomorrow my family is coming to our house for presents and breakfast, and we'll be getting underway right about the time DS likes to go down for a nap. Then it's back to the in-laws' for Christmas dinner.

I am now starting to wish I'd taken Wednesday off from work - but it's too busy at work for that. :(

  • We're driving to DH's relatives 1.5 hours away - once tonight and once next weekend.  I've been dreading it for months!  My DS won't sleep in the car, and if he's cranky and overtired, he'll keep DD awake all the way home.  Then, I'll have two very tired, very cranky kids tomorrow (and again next weekend).  I just keep telling myself that in a couple of years they will be older and able to handle the travel sooo much better :)

  • I'm definitely dreading the nap thing. DS is a little touchy right now. He just got over a stomach bug a couple of days ago and he has four teeth coming in on top (poor kid!) so he has already been a grumpy pain today. He also doesn't eat well when there is a lot going on so it adds to his all-around demeanor.

We did our little family Christmas last night because we will be out all night tonight and all day tomorrow. DS got very overstimulated/fussy when we were opening presents. There was just too much to see and do. It didn't help that he would unwrap something and then take it away to move on to the next present...I don't really blame the kid. I'm worried about how he will be at other people's houses since he was like that in our own home.

I think we are going to bring out the good old moby wrap. He used to take all his naps in a wrap and while I don't think he will get a long nap in it at this age he might get 20 minutes or so. That might be enough for him to push through.

Christmas is usually a very busy time for our family. My parents are divorced so we usually have a lot of different family things going on. Top that off with Christmas day being my husband's (and his twin sister's) birthday....it's a lot. This kid is just going to have to get used to it being the busiest time of the year I guess! ;-)

  • I'm looking forward to tomorrow.  We also have a family policy of staying home on Christmas.

  • we decided to stay at home for the same reasons: poor sleeper + car trip + loud party.

  • We host Christmas Eve, but DS had a TWO HOUR nap before everyone came. And that is totally unheard of! But everyone wanted him to open their presents, so 10 people crowded around, taking pictures, all "oohing and aahing" and he was miserable. It was too much and I just started rushing, "here this and this, I'll just open it!" DH didn't understand but I could feel the breakdown coming!

Then all of DH's family left because they know I'm crazy about bedtime since it's the only think DS does on a schedule. Meanwhile, my parents, who always outstay their welcome were here another hour and a half after everyone else. Mom needed a tea, Dad had a beer to finish, try that jacket on, etc etc. I wanted to tell them to go home already but I'm terrible at being forward with them.

    So glad it's over!

  • I've learned with both my LOs that when there is alot going on, they're usually paying attention to too much to sleep or be cranky.  When they do get cranky I give a bottle, if they go to sleep, great, if not they usually get a second wind.  DS just started his mommy phase and if he's not in a great mood, really doesn't want to be held by anyone but me, but I've also noticed, people don't want to hold a crying baby.  Most people have no problem offering to take DS, even if they see he's a little fussy, but once they see he doesn't want to be with them, they don't want to be with him.

  • We're just staying home since DH had to work Christmas eve and all of our family is to far to travel just for one day.  It's been weird since it's the first christmas we've spent away from family.  But it's also been nice and quiet. :)

  • Our xmas dinner was pretty disastrous at first. DS cried for the first 2 hours of it. He was past his bedtime and REFUSED to nap. Once he had his fit, he got his second wind and was OK the second part of the night but it was so stressful at first. He usually goes to bed for the night at 7:30 and last night went to sleep at 11pm when we got home. He took 3 extra long naps today.

  • It was just the four of us for Christmas, but it was still kind of a disaster.  The grandparents bought WAY too many gifts for the kids.  DS was on a present-high all morning, then he crashed and became super cranky the rest of the day.  Plus DH is sick (man-cold), and DD doesn't nap.  At all.  And we were trying to pack for our road trip to visit family, heading east right along with winter storm Euclid tomorrow.

So, yeah.  I feel like a Grinch, but I did not really enjoy Christmas this year.

DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.
  • We were pretty busy for Christmas Eve and Christmas day.  Luckily, DS and I had a pretty quiet day on Monday, but we went to dinner at family's on Monday night at 5:45.  Dinner was served at 7, DS is usually in bed by then.  He fell asleep in my arms at the dinner table!  He pretty much stayed asleep til we got him home and in bed, then woke up at 545 Christmas morning.  Then Christmas day was insane!  We got up, did presents with just DH and DS, got ready, went to church, left for ILs (40 minutes away), spent the day there, came home at 430 because DH had to go to work, DS and I went to my mom's (we live in the same town) and planned on staying there for awhile.  Fed DS, did his bedtime routine, and put him down at my mom's.  About an hour later, he woke up crying, which is unusual for him.  I got him out of bed and brought him into the living room, where he immediately projectile vomited all over the place.  ICK!  Poor baby (he has never done that before, so I freaked out!)  Needless to say, DS and I headed home and that was how his first Christmas ended!  Tongue Tied
