Parenting after a Loss

vics baby rub?

Sorry.. I don't mean to post so much.. you think I can use the vics baby rub on her chest?  The bottle says 3+ months.. she's almost 2.  I just wonder if it will help her congestion and cough. She actually didn't cough too bad today. I have the humidifier going too.  I'm totally not going to sleep. I'm freaked out and worried. I mean how am I supposed to tell if she's having retractions by her ribs if she's clothed?

Re: vics baby rub?

  • Not a nurse or anything, but I think the baby rub would be ok in moderation.  I'd steer clear of the adult vicks though, that stuff made me feel like my chest was on fire (I can use the baby stuff on me with no issue, kinda like the smell actually).

When DS was sick when he was that small (not RSV, but he had a cold) the only way I could get any sleep myself was to have my hand resting on him so I could feel the breathing motions even though I couldn't see them.

  • I seriously think I'm going to have to have her sleep on my chest or something because I'm really nervous. I just know how dangerous it can be and I'm worried.

  • Almost 2 months or 2 years... Years no problem use it. 2 months keep it away. There could be an allergic react to the oils used in it.

  • Put it on the bottom of her feet until 3m. That works great.

  • I used a Vicks plug in when M was little. It seemed to help.

  • When my boys had a cold we used a nasal aspirator and it seemed to help. My pedi said to put vics on my chest, not theirs, and hold them.

  • I asked my nurses line about this. As long as it doesn't have menthol you are ok and it actually works better if you rub it on their feet and put socks on.

  • Did the pediatrician weigh in? I'd guess it's prob fine. Heck, my mom was telling me to use the adult stuff on my stuffy little guy the other night, and I was like...um...no. My husband sat up with him in the bathroom with the shower on really hot and let the steam do its job. That seemed to help too.
