Baby Names

If you've chosen a girl name in the top 10...

This board often seems to be both anti-top 10 and against anything too out there or spelled "you-neek".

Just curious if there were actually people on here who have selected top 10 names for their DD's on the way.  We have Sofia in our top two.

ETA: Perfect example is the recent "Overkill" post.

  • My DD is Sophia and my son is Ethan. I clearly don't have a problem with choosing popular names :)

  • I have a few of the top ten names on my list. Like Mason, Noah, Abigail, Chloe, Mia. But the names I'm in love with aren't on the top 10 or close to the top 100 actually. Except for Noah. I've always loved that name, and would have named my DS that if my husband didn't hate the name.

  • Popular names don't really bother me. I tend to go by regional statistics and even then I don't let it worry me.

  • We have a Chloe. When I first got pregnant, I was anti-popular name. But my DH and I do not have the same taste in names at all, so finding a name, any name, that we both semi-like is a miracle. I suggested Claudia to DH, which of course he shot down, and Chloe popped in my head so I mentioned it, and he didn't hate it, so we put it on the list.

Before she was born, and even a bit after, I struggled a bit internally with the popularity of Chloe. But every time we discussed names, we'd end up arguing, and eventually I thought, using a popular name that we both like is a heck of a lot better than fighting over names that he or I will never come around to.

We have run into two other Chloes since she's been born, but we run into more Londons, which was #119 the year my oldest DD was born. Chloe totally suits my DD now; it's short and spunky, just like she is.

FWIW, I think Sofia/Sophia is a beatiful name. I'm curious what you other top name is!

  • My favorite girl's name is Emma, but my husband didn't like it (not because it was overused, he just didn't like it), so we added "lynn" to the name (family name on his side of the family), and we love it (Emmalynn)! I don't think Emmalynn itself is top 10, but I'm pretty sure Emma is.

  • I have an Emma. It was the 2nd most popular name in 2003 when she was born. However, we sometimes run into other Emma's on the playground, etc., but hasn't had one in her class yet.

First, loved your post! Read parts of it to DH because I use anti semi in my speech a lot. Too funny!
Livia is out other finalist. Our LN is Italian, DS has Italian FN... Livia dates from 58 bc Rome ranks in the 900s. We love both so will wait until we meet her.

  • Our sons name is still in the top 10 and it doesn't bother me. Our daughters name is going to be Lydia and I haven't seen it in any lists. We just pick what we like.

  • My DD is Chloe but I've never met another although its supposedly popular
  • A ton of my girl names are on that Overkill post. It makes me sad because Lillian is after my great aunt, Cora is for my DH's grandmother (and a shortened form of my own name, both of which I thought were incredibly unpopular) Rose is a MN I desperately want after my grandmother. My little sister is named Sophie (Zofia) after our great grandmother and that was literally the only other Sophie we'd ever heard until about 8 months after she was born when it exploded in popularity. I'm trying to avoid ultra-popular names for some reason, but it's really hard when all of these names I've loved for years and years are suddenly everywhere

  • If I have a girl, her name will be Emma. I love that name and it doesn't bother me at all that it's popular. I couldn't imagine not choosing a name I love because it's popular.

  • DDs name isn't popular at all and I really liked that. But with DD2 we chose a popular name (charlotte).

I have a hard time agreeing with DH on names so when we landed on ones that worked, we went with it and stopped discussing it.

Go with what you like. Who cares if its overused or in a book or people turn their nose up to it. They can name their own kids.

  • Eh.  I have no problem with popular names.  "Popular" is relative.  In 1974, 4% of baby girls born in the US were named Jennifer and 4% of baby boys were named Michael.  In other words, approximately 1/25 girls were Jennifer or 1/50 of all babies.  To me, there is a big difference between that and the 1/100 girls named Emma in 2011 (or if you are looking for even more comfort, 1/200 babies).

  • I went with Charlotte for my DD. It's not very common in our area and I don't know any Charlotte's so the fact that it was Number 1 for 2012 doesn't really bother me.

  • My DD's name was in the top 3 the year she was born. I had loved it for years, so I didn't want to give it up just because it became popular. So far I have met 2 other girls near her age with the same name (and I volunteer/work with kids, so I have heard a lot of names).

And I was one of three kids in my kindergarten class with the same name and it was NBD to me. I also haven't met too many others with my name since (I was surprised to find it was #10 the year I was born when I looked it up last year).

  • Our DD is Chloe. Popularity doesn't bother me. lol that mine is the third Chloe mentioned in this post.

If this one's a boy, he'll be Jack after a family member. It bothers me a tad that Jack and variants have become so overdone, because this name has been in the works for us for a good twelve years. But family trumps popularity.

  • I don't mind too much.

If LO is a boy, he will be Ethan.  It's on the list, but where we live, I only know one Ethan IRL.  I have a hard time believing it's as popular as it is listed. It's regional.

For a girl, I tend to lean away from popular names, but DH likes Sophie, so we may go that route

  • Our DD1's name is Addison and I know it is not well liked on this board. It fits her to a T and I couldn't have imagined naming her anything else. I think you should pick a name that you love and as long as its nothing spelt hideous or a complete off the wall name go for it. Just remember your kid has to live with this name so make sure you would like being called it for 80 + years. I think Sofia is a beautiful name and if you like it go for it.

BTW Addison was number 11 in our daughters birth year but I have yet to meet another Addison.

  • Although DD's name wasn't in the top 10 (it was in the top 20), I personally would choose a name I love even if it was popular.  Popularity these days is much different than it was 30+ years ago.  My name is Jessica, and I was one of many growing up.  Today there are many more names to choose from that I just don't think that most names would fall into being anywhere near as popular as Jennifer/Jessica once were.
