Trying to Get Pregnant

FYI Health Coverage Maternity

Just an FYI ladies.... and this is different for everyone as I'm sure there's a million plans out there. But could still be helpful to someone.

Since we've been talking TTC thought I'd call our insurance to see about what's covered, etc. (I've heard horror stories!!!)

Well.... thank god I called! We use Anthem and if you're planning on having a baby you need to add a Maternity Rider to your insurance. AND it doesn't "kick in" for 9 months from when you add it. You can't add it if you are already expecting... being pregnant is a "preexisting condition." I just assumed our plan (and we have an excellent one!) covered pregnancy/labor and delivery.

It didn't cost that much to add, but I'm so relieved I thought to call about it.

Just though I'd put it out there.

Re: FYI Health Coverage Maternity

  • I just had open season for our coverage and picked a plan with no deductible and great maternity/infertility coverage since that was very important to both of us.  It also has great bariatric surgery coverage, something I've been contemplating.

  • BCBS has the same terms. suck! and w/ BCBS you have to keep maternity coverage from 10 months before they will pay anything and for the entirety of your ttc journey. its crazy
  • Yea, I guess I am really naive.... I just assumed it covered everything. ugh.

Oh well. At least I caught it before we got KU.

  • Mine covers 100% maternity.  I thought insurence companies couldnt consider pregnancy as a 'pre-exsisiting condition'.  But that must vary state to state.

  • It depends on the type of insurance you are getting.  HIPPA covers some and says that pregnancy can't be considered a preexisting but not all.

  • Grrr...that should totally not be legal.  I'm glad you figured it out now.

FYI Obama is asking for input about the national health care system right now through change.gov.  I have a lot to say about the issue and I'll be including pregnacy/maternity/IF/BCP coverage in my comments.  You might consider doing the same thing, if you think it's important, regardless of how you feel about his presidency.

***************************** Our beautiful daughter was born in October 2009. Turns out she was quite the miracle. After two years of TTC, diagnosed with DOR. A couple of failed treatment cycles later, we decided to let go of our hope for more biological children and explore adoption.

Thank you for the heads up! I definitely will. Not to start a political debate, but feeling he was leaning towards universal healthcare (which I am adamently opposed to) is the only reason he lost my vote. Thank you!

  • Is this an individual plan? From my days of working for an insurance brokerage that is VERY common in individual plans, almost universal unless the state laws require something different. In contrast, company plans almost always cover maternity with no rider. In my state it is illegal for company plans not to cover maternity.
