tipping etiquette question NBR

I have an appointment next sat. to get my hair cut by a friend/owner of the salon.  She charges $60 for a hair cut.  I was always under the impression that you did not tip the owner, yet..I have never had the owner of a salon cut my hair.  Does anyone know the proper way to handle this?

  • I tip and hope they don't accept it.  It's 50/50

  • I would tip. I always tip my hairdresser and he is the owner as well

  • I usually tip 15-20% depending on how good my hair looks when I leave.  I would tip $12-15 on a $60 hair cut.

  • I am a miser and get a super cheap wash, cut and dry for 25 dollars.  I tip 5. And give two dollars to the hair washer.  It always annoys me, but I feel like a dollar is too little and so I give two.  But, then I feel bad because all she did was wash my hair and got half of what the lady got that cut and dried this mess!  So I end up giving her another dollar too. I spend more in tips then the freaking haircut.

  • My highlights and cut cost 60. I tip 20, but only bc I know he's undercharging me

  • I only go twice a year, haircut and highlights=$150 so I usually tip $15 (the same girl washes and does color/cuts).  And then they almost always guilt me into buying shampoo and conditioner.  I always spend about $200.  Freakin ridiculous.

  • I see the owner, too, and I tip 20%. It's worth it to me...she is always booked solid but since I'm a good client she works me in if something comes up (like if I need my highlights redone before pictures or an event) and she regularly throws in a free deep conditioning treatment and product samples.

The tip-owner thing is weird because many stylists rent the chair space so they get more profit (theoretically) than a stylist who doesn't rent the chair and works directly for the salon itself instead.

  • I would tip...between 15-20% depending on how much you like the result ;)

  • For highlights mine usually costs around 80. I tip 20, whether its the owner or someone else.
  • I go to a salon where they don't take tips.  Makes it much easier.

Of course, they just bake it in to the price of the haircut.
