Leg cramps!

Anyone having TERRIBLE leg cramping at night? Last night I had them in both calves and each lasted about 5 minutes. Absolutely awful! I woke my husband up crying in pain. Any ideas or tips and tricks to prevent these?

Re: Leg cramps!

  • OMG...this happened to me for the first time last night.  It was excruciating!  I got up and tried to walk it off and it helped a bit.  Unfortunately my pain has continued throughout the day (although less intense).  I've tried everything to relieve what feels like a knot...foam roller, massage ball, spin class and heat...nothing helps and a friend told me that it will probably get worse!

  • I had a really bad one last night too.  I actually screamed in pain and woke me and DH up.  I think I forgot to drink my middle of the night glass of water - that has been what has been minimizing them for me.

  • I had these too, they are awful and OB suggested one banana a day for potassium and in addition to my prenatal pills, she wanted me to take a calcium/magnesium supplement as well. It has helped tremendously.
  • I've woken up with cramping legs several times, I know this may sound weird but I find doing the downward dog and stretching out my legs helps SIGNIFICANTLY! I mean the cramping stops almost immediately, they are a little sore in the morning but I am able to get back to sleep.

  • Same here.. I scared my poor DH shttless bc I woke up screaming with a charley horse, of course his first thought was the baby. I was so thankful he was home, he massaged it out so at least it stopped but that leg was sore for days afterward! I've made sure to drink my water and the occasional banana and it hasn't come back. I want to start stretching but havent tried that yet.

  • I get them almost every night and am miserable. I've upped my water, potassium and calcium and none of these techniques has made them go away entirely. I either walk (when possible) or massage them out but mostly just wait it out miserably until they pass. Funny that a PP mentioned downward dog, as that's been a great stretch for me too in terms of trying to stretch out the cramp. Good luck!

  • I get foot cramps and calf cramps. They're awful. I had these with DS as well. I found that drinking a Propel water before bed at night really helps!! I also try to have a banana as an evening snack...but hate the taste, so that's why the propel seems to help!

  • I just started getting these in the middle of the night too. The first time I woke up crying and honestly thought something was very wrong. Stretching it out, as much as it hurts, is the only thing that helps a little. I'm usually able to get back to sleep. But my calf has been sore nonstop since I keep getting them. It feels like a pulled muscle all day and like someone stabbed me in the middle of the night. My mom told me she had these almost every night during her pregnancies through third tri. I've been staying hydrated but nothing really seems to help.

  • Thanks ladies! I've been trying to drink more water and doing a lot of stretches. Didn't have any cramps last night! Yay! Now to just keep them away for the next 3 months!
  • I get them all the time. I've found that staying hydrated and increasing the amount of potassium and calcium I get really helps, but I still get them sometimes (like last night). So frustrating, not to mention they scare my poor boyfriend who wakes up to me screaming sometimes.

  • I started chewing 1000 mg of Viactiv calcium chews before bed and haven't had one since.  Of course, I had my doc okay it first!
  • Taking my prenatal vitamin at night has limited me to only 2 cramps.
