Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Those who did/do Sleepeasy-i have questions...

My DD will be 6 months in a week and I am gearing up to start Sleepeasy method over new years weekend and i have a few questions for those who did it. She currently needs to nursed to sleep (and then i quickly put in a paci) and in the middle of the night she just nurses to sleep (and doesn't need paci).

1)   DD gets up 3x a night to eat, usually at 10, 1 and 4.  Do i start night weaning PRIOR to starting the other "training"?

2) DD takes a paci to sleep, and putting her down is fairly easy with using the paci, however we will have to go cold turkey with removing it per the book. This makes me very nervous....how did it go?

3) Did you also do naps at the same time?  DD barely sleeps at DC, but DC is open to whatever we want to do.

Any other thoughts/encouraging words on this method???

We did it at the same time.  DD had been eating 3x as well -- we kept one in the MOTN but weaned her off the early and late feeds per the book.  After a month, we weaned her off the final MOTN feeding and now she STTN without eating.

    2) DD takes a paci to sleep, and putting her down is fairly easy with using the paci, however we will have to go cold turkey with removing it per the book. This makes me very nervous....how did it go?

We tried still doing the paci and just popping it back in during checkins, and found that it made things worse -- she would play with and chew on the paci to keep herself awake longer, and then scream like crazy every time she dropped it.  We realized she would probably fall asleep faster if we just stopped giving it to her, and we were right.  After a couple of bad nights, she didn't miss it anymore.

    3) Did you also do naps at the same time?  DD barely sleeps at DC, but DC is open to whatever we want to do.

We did not do them together.  I tried for two days, but it was awful because she was barely getting any sleep at night or during the day.  We did naps about a month later and I think it made it easier that she was used to going to sleep on her own at night by then.

Any other thoughts/encouraging words on this method???

Some babies take to it surprisingly easily within a couple of days.  Some, like my DD, are incredibly stubborn and take longer.  It WILL eventually work, but you have to be consistent and stick with it.  It will suck big time listening to her cry and scream the first couple of nights, but just keep reminding yourself that it will all be worth it.

It is truly one of the best parenting decisions we've made so far -- DD sleeps so much more soundly and actually gets the amount of sleep she's supposed to. So now she's happier during the day and has more energy to play and learn.  And we're much happier too because we're also sleeping more and not dealing with as much stress.

    Good luck!

I think like PP said you can do it at the same time. We didn't have this issue with DS.

    2) DD takes a paci to sleep, and putting her down is fairly easy with using the paci, however we will have to go cold turkey with removing it per the book. This makes me very nervous....how did it go?

We still put DS down with the paci, but we stopped putting it back in the MOTN. I thought this would be majorly traumatic and cause endless bad nights, but he actually didn't fuss more than 5 minutes at a time before falling back asleep unless it was after 5:30 AM -- and then he was just hungry. (We started doing a dream feed.)

    3) Did you also do naps at the same time?  DD barely sleeps at DC, but DC is open to whatever we want to do.

We are doing naps. He goes down pretty easily now, but he still often wakes up after 30 minutes and will fuss a lot. I'm a little frustrated that we haven't seen longer naps yet, but I have to remind myself we've only been doing this for a week.

Any other thoughts/encouraging words on this method???

I tried doing the Baby Whisperer techniques of Pick Up/Put Down and Shush-Pat, and both just made DS more upset. SleepEasy has worked a LOT better for his temperament.

  • I did the weaning along with the training. I chose to decrease the time he nursed every other night to make it a more gradual process and it worked really well. I also chose to keep one feeding half way through the night. We worked on naps at the same time, but I still really never know what I'm going to get when it comes to naps. It's much harder to iron out nap time difficulties and he's always switching it up on me. He never used a paci so I can't help with that. We are very glad we did Sleepeasy and I hope it goes well for you. GL!
