Counterfeit Ergo - Be Careful!!

I posted in another thread, but thought this deserves its own post.

I recently bought an ergo carrier. It came directly from China (with DHL) so I thought it was weird. I emailed Ergo and they confirmed it's fake. I had bought it on ergocarrrierusa.com which I thought was their official website but it turned out to be one of the many fake websites out there.

There are very few authorized Ergo retailers. However, the list of known/suspected counterfeit ergobaby product website is ridiculously LONG:

Aside from the quality of the packaging, I honestly cannot tell the difference between the fake and real carrier. However, I do know I wanted a real Ergo that is for sure safe for my baby.      Smile

  • A friend of mine did picture comparisons between the real and fake. They have different buckles, the logo design is different, and the label on the inside, a little white label, is different. Other than that, they look a lot alike.

I found a comparison picture on the internet (some blog). I think the fake carriers constantly improve because none of the differences applied to my carrier. I really could not tell.

  • I actually unknowkingly bought a fake Ergo at Once Upon a Child. I already had one and I was going to buy it for a friend.  I took it home and immediatly noticed differences.  The fake was lighter, the fabric was not as heavy, the padding on the straps were not as firm and the warning sign inside the Ergo was in a different spot AND the clips were not the same.

  • I purchased one on amazon.com. It never occurred to me that items fulfilled by amazon could be fake, but it was. I actually didn't even know it was fake after receiving it until I heard about so many fakes being sold and investigated the details of the one I had vs real ones using an online website. The differences are very subtle. Luckily, amazon was great about returning it.

  • After googling photos of the fakes, I am pretty sure the one I got is a fake. Actually, I am positive it it. Good thing I am not out much money.

This could be a fall hazard because the buckles are not the same.  The Ergo buckle has a jagged edges to stop it from opening on its own due to weight while the fake does not.

Mine has jagged edged buckles. I googled the pictures, and the buckles look identical. The only difference that I can tell on mine is the coloring of the front label, no snaps on the shoulders, you have to thread it through a d-ring and the warning label inside only has the warning in English.

Evidently, they are getting better and better at making fakes. My buckles even say Stealth like the original ones.

The other thing is that you don't know how it's constructed sewing wise. Ergo carriers are tested. There was a fake one that was taken apart and that thing wouldn't of held a baby for long before ripping apart!

Could you please share the website you looked at?  I bought my sport from amazon before I knew there were counterfeits. TIA!

Thanks for sharing your story.  I bought our Ergo at REI during a sale, but you can also use a 20% off member coupon when it's available.

I checked out the website where you purchased your counterfeit and their website looks legit and professional enough.  They claim they are based out of Maryland.  Can you file a claim with the BBB to address counterfeit concerns?

  • The real Ergo company is based out of Hawaii for future reference :)

The stuff is actually made in China though. So the labels should read something like Designed in HI, Made in China.

  • Yeah, I got mine on Amazon from a vendor called Toys Inc and just discovered today that mine is also a fake. I wouldn't have known except that I noticed that the snaps on the cold weather cover, which I bought at a local boutique, don't match up to anything on the straps, so I went back to the boutique to ask about it and they confirmed that my carrier is fake. I took a good look at the ones that they had in the store. Like a PP, there are D-rings on the straps instead of snaps for the hood. Also, the chest strap on the fake is very simply looped around the arm straps, instead of a cross-stitched design that prevents them from twisting and rotating. And in general the stitching and construction of the real ones seem to be sturdier.

The only reason I went to Amazon in the first place was that all the stores in my area seemed to be out of stock all the time.

I'm not sure if it's worth trying to return this to the vendor because I've since moved to the UK and postage would probably be prohibitive, but I have reported it to Amazon.

  • Another difference I just noticed. The real carrier is made in Vietnam, not China.

So does the real carrier say "Made in Vietnam"?

Mine does! It's the Bundle of Joy - Original Black/Camel with Camel Insert ordered just about two weeks ago.

  • I think there are several countries where real ones are manufactured. I bought an organic carrier yesterday from an authorized bricks-and-mortar retailer. The tag says it was made in India.
