Reading...

On average, about how many books are you reading your LO per week? And when? Before bed? During the day when you have time?

I was reading to Gator before bed until about a month ago when she started going crazy wanting to rip pages. Now I am a slacker. We still get in about five books a week, but I have to read them to her when she is sitting in her chair eating so she cannot attack the pages.

Re: Reading...

  • I read bits and pieces of books all day. She right now prefers to look at them on her own and make noises at all the animals or point out every baby, character she recognizes or "pretties" which is an all purpose word.

  • We read approximately 3 to 4 books before each nap and at bedtime. It became routine for us to get her into a good sleeping pattern while we did the CIO. She was a horrible sleep fighter and sucked at napping, but reading has really helped to chill her out.

  • LBB is really into books right now. He is constantly bringing them to us to read and he likes to look at the pages in the car out during diaper changes. If I'm home with him we'll read 3 to 5 books during the day and then he'll read a book with DH when DH gets home from work and another before bed. If I'm working he'll read 1 to 2 books before/after work and the book before bed.

I want to point out none of these are War and Peace or anything, his favorite book is called farm animals and it's pictures of adult and baby animals, so it doesn't take long to read. And I want to encourage reading, so no matter what we're doing, when LBB brings us a book we stop and read to him.

  • Right now we read one before bed and usually I'll get one in during the day most days. He used to sit on my lap nicely during book time at night so I'd read at least two. Now he just wants to run around and play so I'm lucky if he pays attention to the one. I still read it to him though, even if he doesn't look like he's listening. I also make sure there are books out for him during the day. He likes to carry them around, and he'll stop to look through them by himself several times a day.
  • We have about five board books on a low shelf that L reads to herself or brings to us to read throughout the day. She also has a favorite pop up book that she will make us pull down for her a couple times a day. She's not interested in the non board picture books yet.

  • S has a gigantic bag of board books that were given to us by a friend. And he prefers to go through them pointing at pictures and "reading" them himself. I have started reading a "First Bible" book to him, he mainly just wants to destroy the pages. HA. We attempt to read a book every night before bed, and just here and there during the day if we are home. He has a sensory cat book that stays in his diaper bag, because its his favorite, so he usually "reads" that several times a day.

  • He has a handful of books he looks at all day. He brings them to me and then I read some of it, until he snatches it away and either looks by it himself or throws it on the ground. He has not sat through a book once. That is ok though.

  • I probably read 3-5 books per day to DD.  However we don't always get through every book, because in the middle she will get bored and go get another book and bring that one over.

My mom watches DD during the day and reads probably 10-15 books per day (she is a retired kindergarten teacher.)

  • We read about 10 to 12 a day. E is currently obsessed with books and if you let her she would sit on your lap all day to read. If we don't read to her she will gather her books and bring them to her chair and flip through them herself.

Edited to say. 10 to 12 not 1012

  • Our collection of board books is on her little bookshelf and by the end of the day every single book has been pulled down usually.  Lily will look through most of them at least once during the day and "read" to herself.  She also will bring a book over to DH or myself and back up into our lap; sometimes she wants us to read the book (we usually have to read it very quickly as she turns the pages super fast) and sometimes she reads it to herself and just wants to cuddle up to us at the same time.  We read one book before bedtime each night.  The non-board books are elsewhere (so she can't rip them) and I keep meaning to read her one or two each day, but since they're not as accessible I forget most of the time.

I guess I can't really answer your question about how many books per week.  On a daily basis, it's probably between 3 and 50 (with many repeats in there) books that get read to her, plus all the "reading" she does on her own.

  • We read at least 10-20 books a day. This is not my choice. DD loves books and wants to read every one on her shelf over and over. I'm thrilled that she enjoys books and reading, but oh my gosh I am so sick of every book we own. We're going to have to start visiting the library every day. lol

This! I can maybe get through 2 pages until he closes it on me, opens it up to a different page, closes it! We try, but for right now he prefers to "read" on his own!
